Halloween inspired socks? Why not?! No cute pumpkins here… brace yourself for something crazy. Something Sally might make for Jack Skellington.

Inspired by the way parts can be sewn together into something new, these socks are actually just knit in the round with a fake seam stitched on later for effect. The two socks have mirrored patterns to help ease the dreaded second sock syndrome. It’s almost like knitting a different sock.

These socks are sized for women and men’s feet and can be made in any colors – just one for a more tasteful sock or many for the full creature effect. The socks shown have reversed colors but you don’t have to do that. Add more stitching or skip it entirely. Knitter’s choice.

Perhaps Frankenstein’s monster would roam the streets of a cold village at night looking for an understanding new friend while wearing these socks. Or maybe that’s just me.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS

Foot circumference: 7.5 [8.0, 8.5, 9, 9.5] inches (19 [20, 21.5, 23, 24] cm) unstretched.
Will comfortably stretch to fit 8.5[9, 9.5, 10, 10.5] inches.

MATERIALS

Knit Picks Gloss [70% merino wool, 30% Silk; 220yd/201m per 50g skein]; colors: Porcini and Parsley; 1 skein each.
Optional: 3 yards of a contrasting fingering weight yarn for contrast stitching. I used Knit Picks Palette [100% Peruvian Highland wool; 231yd/211m per 50g skein]; color: Garnet Heather.

Recommended needle size:
1 or 2 US #1.5/2.5mm 32” circular needles for magic loop method
OR
1 set US #1.5/2.5mm double pointed needles.
[always use a needle size that gives you the gauge listed below -- every knitter's gauge is unique]

1 tapestry needle
2 stitch markers of different colors or styles

This pattern is written using the magic loop method, where half the stitches are on N1, and the other half are on N2. Use one or two circular needles, whichever you are more comfortable with. If you prefer, you can also easily divide these stitches across double pointed needles.

RT: Right Twist. Skip next st and k second st tbl in front of first st, then k first st tbl, drop both sts from LH needle.

LT: Left Twist. Skip next st and k second st tbl behind first st, then k first st tbl, drop both sts from LH needle.

Twisted Rib:
Round 1: (k1 tbl, p1) to end of rnd. Every round is the same.
OR
Round 1: (p1, k1 tbl) to end of rnd. Every round is the same.

DIRECTIONS

Cuff One (Tan sock) :
Using Green, CO 56[60, 64, 68, 72] sts. Divide evenly between needles and join to begin working in the round, being careful not to twist.

Work in Twisted Rib (starting with p1) for 1.5 inches. Cut green yarn. Join Tan yarn and knit one round. Proceed to Leg One.

Cuff Two (Green sock) :
Using Tan, CO 56[60, 64, 68, 72] sts. Divide evenly between needles and join to begin working in the round, being careful not to twist.

Work in Twisted Rib (starting with k1 tbl) for 1.5 inches. Cut tan yarn. Join green yarn and knit one round. Proceed to Leg Two.

Leg One (Tan sock) :
Leg Round: P1, k1 tbl, p1, k11[13, 15, 15, 17], work Chart One, k9[11, 13, 13, 15] (p1, k1 tbl) twice.

Work as established until four full repeats of Chart One have been completed. Proceed to Heel Setup.

Leg Two (Green sock) :
Leg Round: K11[13, 15, 15, 17], p1 (k1 tbl p1) 3 times, k9[11, 13, 13, 15], work Chart Two.

Work as established until three full repeats and 11 rounds of a fourth repeat of Chart Two have been completed.
Work one final round 12 of Chart Two, stopping after stitch 15[15, 15, 17, 17] of the Chart. This is very important to ensure that the heel is positioned correctly. Proceed to Heel Setup.

Heel Setup (Both Socks):
You will work the heel flap back and forth over 28[30, 32, 34, 36] sts. Leave the remaining instep sts as they are on the needles for now. You will not use then while working the heel flap.

Heel Flap One (Tan Sock):
Row 1 [RS]: Sl 1, (k1 tbl, p1) to last st, k1 tbl.
Row 2 [WS]: Sl 1, (k1, p1) to last st, k1.
Rep these 2 rows 12[14, 16, 18, 20] times more.
Proceed to Heel Turn.

Round 3: (k1 tbl, p1) twice, k21[23, 25, 27, 29], p1, k1 tbl, p1; (k1 tbl, p1) twice, k19[21, 23, 25, 27], m1, ssk, p1, k1 tbl, p1.

Round 4: [(K1 tbl, p1) twice, k21[23, 25, 27, 29], p1, k1 tbl, p1] twice.
Rep rnd 4 until sock measures 2 inches short of full foot length to tip of toe.

Proceed to Toe.

Toe (Both Socks):
Join Cuff color.
Round 1: K.
Round 2: P.
Rep these 2 rnds for half an inch.

Round 1: [K1, ssk, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1] twice.
Round 2: P.
Rep these 2 rnds 11 times until 12[16, 20, 24, 28] sts remain.

You now have 6[8, 10, 12, 14] sts on both needles. Break yarn, leaving long enough strand to graft toe using Kitchener stitch. Graft remaining stitches together.

Embroidery: (optional)
With a third color yarn (I used Knit Picks Palette) loosely top stitch down the back of the sock and around the toe for a scar-like effect.

FINISHING

Weave in ends. Block as desired.
