piquant

When I was visiting my family in Japan I saw some garments similar to this one and was captivated by the versatility of it. I knew I had to create one for myself.

On the surface it’s just a classic scarf with buttons along the side, but when you add a ribbon and some clever buttoning you get several different garments as well.

My favorite is the cardigan style. There’s something almost Victorian about it. But the shrug [pictured at left], sleeves, and hood are fun options too.

I can’t wait to see what else you do with it! Maybe a skirt?

SIZE
This scarf comes in one size. For the majority of the styles shown this works well, as the lacing can be adjusted in many ways. However, the cardigan and shrug styles have the potential to be too large or too small.

If it appears that those styles will be too large, you can overlap the edges and work the lacing through the holes to make the size smaller. You can also consider using a yarn that gives you a smaller gauge to decrease the width and length.

The lace portion on the edges of the scarf is quite stretchy. This means that the basic scarf, worn as a cardigan, will accommodate hips to at least 46 inches. At that size I leave the bottom unlaced and the bottom button undone for a charming look reminiscent of a Victorian frock coat. If you do not like the look of the panels with negative ease or if you wish to fit larger sizes, the back can be laced with the edges apart to enhance the corset-like effect. I have also included an optional panel that you may use to add a flash of back interest, as well as any needed width for the shrug and cardigan styles.

FINISHING
Weave in ends. Block to measurements listed above.

With sewing needle and thread, sew 1 button for every 7-8 eyelet holes along one long edge of scarf, using flat buttons on WS of piece to reinforce shank buttons as follows:
Secure thread to WS of work at button location. Draw thread up through work to RS, and through hole of shank button. Draw thread down through work to WS, and through one hole of flat button. Draw thread through other hole of flat button, back up through work to RS, and through hole of shank button. Repeat this several times, then secure thread.

Now for the fun bit: how to wear it! Here are just a few suggestions. Make it your own!

Scarf: Just throw it around your neck!

VScardi34blank
Cardigan: Fold scarf in half, matching short edges. Lace together lower portion of long edges as shown in photos. To achieve a larger hip circumference, lace each long edge of panel to long edges of scarf, near ends. To achieve a smaller hip circumference, overlap edges before lacing. Slip arms through opening, and button together in front.

VSshrugBACKblank
Shrug: Lace short ends of scarf together, and try on as shown in photo; adjust lacing as necessary, overlapping ends or adding panel if needed. This will form lower back of shrug. Lace center of long edge to top of lower back, leaving a large sleeve opening at either side. Slip arms through openings and fasten several buttons at front.

VSsleevesblank
Sleeves: Fold scarf in half, matching long edge. Button edges together, leaving an opening approx. 20 inches wide at center. Try on sleeves and button or unbutton as needed to adjust fit.

VShoodblank
Hood: Fold scarf in half, matching short edges. Beginning at fold, button long edges together for approx. 12 inches. Resulting pocket forms hood.
