INTRODUCTION

Watch It!

beauty shot

Extraspicy

I love my smartwatch; it's one of the most useful things I own. The problem is that I also like to keep my hands warm. Living in Wisconsin, the two are pretty much incompatible for about half the year. I have to scrunch up my glove if I want to look at the latest notification, and if I need to use my watch, I have to take my glove off entirely.

Then I remembered Knitty's Teknika pattern, which allows you to use your smartphone while still wearing gloves, and that got me thinking: "What if there was a way access your smartWATCH instead?"

Here's the answer I came up with. By building a special flap into the watch hand's wrist, my "Watch It!" gloves keep your hands warm and let you see your smartwatch. Even better, the use of conductive thread enables you to access the touch screen. (As an added bonus, that conductive thread also lets you use your smartphone in the same way as Teknika.)

The watch flap uses clear snaps to hold it in place, which means you can close the watch opening and wear them as normal gloves. Because the flap is worked as a double-sided cable pattern, the gloves look attractive whether it is up or down. In addition, the wrists are slightly loose, so you don't get the unsightly "bulge" that inevitable occurs if you wear a watch or bracelets underneath.

To accommodate all of these cool features, the cuff is worked in pieces and stitched together before starting the hand. The result is a pair of attractive, functional gloves that will have everybody talking—or possibly texting—about them. And for once, you'll be able to see those texts with warm hands.

36 sts/48 rows = 4 inches/10 cm in stockinette stitch on smaller needles

60 sts/48 rows = 4 inches/10 cm in Vertical Cable – Double-Sided pattern stitch on larger needles

PATTERN NOTES

[Knitty's list of standard abbreviations and techniques can be found here.]

Because most people wear their watch on the same wrist all the time, the watch flap is only worked on one glove. For this pattern, I have assumed that the watch is worn on the left wrist. Should you wear your watch on the right wrist, appropriate alterations are included at the end of the pattern.

On the Needles
Since the cuff pieces are worked flat, you may prefer to use straight or circular needles. However, as the pieces are so narrow, they are easily worked on two dpn, making additional needles unnecessary. Similarly, while the hands can be worked using Magic Loop or two circular needles, these techniques make it difficult to work the fingers. I recommend using dpn throughout, or at least switching to dpn for the fingers.

In order to match the gauge of the Vertical Cable, the Vertical Cable – Double-Sided must be worked on larger needles. All other parts are worked on the smaller needles.

On Picking Up The Hand Stitches
Attaching the Hand requires picking up 46[50, 54] sts along the upper edge of the Cuff, which consists of approximately 76[80, 84] rows. To distribute these sts evenly, you might find it easier to first pick up all sts using very small dpn and then purling only the required sts. For example, if picking up 50 sts from 80 rows, you might work (p1, drop 1, p2, drop 1, p1, drop 1, p1) 10 times. Note that purl sts are worked at both ends of the pick-up rep; this means that the last row will be picked up, rather than left hanging.

To make sure the finger lengths match for both gloves, it is recommended that you keep count of the number of rnds used to work each finger.

On the Snaps
In "Notions," one snap refers to both the "male" and "female" halves, so a single snap is really two pieces. In other words, for ten snaps, you should have ten male halves and ten female halves.

A trick for placing the snaps correctly on the watch flap is to sew them on back-to-back. This will ensure that the flap sits flush, whether open or closed.

On the Conductive Thread
Unlike Teknika, the conductive thread is stitched on as part of the Finishing. This allows for more localized and denser coverage. This conductive thread is applied using a modified Duplicate Stitch, such that the stitches are worked in a St st pattern over rev St st (see pictures). If desired, you can work the conductive thread on the Left Forefinger as well, or even multiple fingers, depending on how you access your smartwatch and your smartphone.
