In this sweater, my goal was
to make something simple and beautiful that
is also versatile and interesting.
As a general rule, I appreciate
asymmetry in art, architecture, and design,
which was why I decided to use an off-center
cable to break up the front of the sweater as
well as to split the hem and the collar.
The yarn is a very stretchy
cotton blend that holds the shape of the cable
beautifully.
The collar can be worn pinned
up like a turtleneck or folded down to reveal
a little collarbone. It's a clever way to deal
with cotton's heaviness as a turtleneck and
guarantees that, when you want it to stand up,
it absolutely will. If you like a stand-up neck
all the time with no fold-over, just knit the
neck shorter. |

 Sew
Front to Back at shoulders.
Using US #7/4.5mm circular needle and beginning
at right front edge of neckline with RS facing,
pick up and k 96[96, 100, 100, 104, 104] sts around
neckline. (Pick up and k 1 st in each bound off
st and approx. 3 sts for every 4 rows; if you
do not get the number listed, be sure to obtain
a number that is divisible by 4.)
Do not join. Row 1 [WS]: P4,
k3, p2, [k2, p2] to last 7 sts, k3, p4. Row
2 [RS]: K4, p3, k2, [p2, k2] to last 7 sts,
p3, k4.
Continue in pattern as set until collar measures
2[2, 2.25, 2.25, 2.25, 2,25] inches. In
the rows which follow, when decreasing stitches,
decrease them evenly throughout the row, avoiding
the 9 sts at each edge of the collar. This will
result in some ribs in the pattern which are
only 1 st wide. When later increasing stitches,
increase them in the same ribs which were decreased
before.
 Decrease
4 stitches in next row.
Work 1 row in pattern as set.
Decrease 2 stitches in next row. 90[90, 94,
94, 98, 98] sts.

Using US #9/5.5mm circular needle, increase
4 stitches in the next row.
Work 1 row in pattern.
Increase 2 stitches in the next row. 96[96,
100, 100, 104, 104] sts.
Continue in pattern until collar measures 4.5[4.5,
5, 5, 5, 5] inches.
Using US #10.5/6.5mm circular needle, continue
in pattern until collar measures 6[6.5, 7.25,
7.5, 7.5, 7.5] inches.
BO all sts loosely in pattern.
Sew sleeves into armholes.
Sew sleeve seams and side seams.
Weave in all ends and block as desired. |
