Tangy

When I first saw this yarn in my LYS, I knew it had to become something outrageous. The riotous combination of colors evokes memories of a particular breed of circus where fantastical creatures, obnoxious clowns and acrobatic performers unite to entrance the mind and enthrall the spirit.

Here, rivulets of cables flow from the top of the leg, gently curving themselves around the heel and toe. The channels of smaller cables are actually twisted stitches; these simple embellishments make a stunning detail when carried down the edges of the foot and around the toe. A clever twist on the three-needle bindoff finishes these socks in style, and is flatter and more comfortable than might first appear.

Wild colors just not your thing? These look equally beautiful in a solid color!

DIRECTIONS

Leg
CO 72 [80] sts.

Divide sts between needles as follows: N1 & N2: 18 [20]; N3: 20 [22]; N4; 16 [18].
(NOTE: if you are using a circular needle, place 34 [38] on front needle and 38 [42] sts on back needle, placing stitch marker after 16th [18th] st on the front needle to mark the beg of round.)
Dividing sts in this way will help you avoid having to rearrange sts later in the pattern.

Round 1: [K1 tbl, p1] rep to end of round.

Repeat this round until work measures one inch.

Work 4 repeats of appropriate Cirque Stitch Pattern, ending with Round 8 [9] on 4th rep.

Next row (working only across sts on N1) [RS]: Slip 2 with yarn in back (wyib), p1, sl1 wyib, p4[5], sl4 wyib, p4[5], sl1 wyib, p1, turn.

Heel Flap
Heel flap will now be worked flat across 34 [38] sts on N1 & N4, starting with a WS row. Directions are given as though for one needle.

Continuing in patt as established, work 28 [32] rows.  Note: Remember that when working flat, all patterning is done on the RS rows -- on WS  rows, just knit the knits and purl the purls.

Next Row (WS): K1, p1, k4 [5], RNDD, k4 [5], p1, k1, p2, k1, p1, k4 [5], RNDD, k4 [5], p1, k1. 30 [34] sts.
Second Row [RS]: P12 [14], k1, p1, TW, p1, k1, p12 [14].
Third Row [WS]: K12 [14], p1, k1, p2, k1, p1, k12 [14].

Repeat the last two rows once more.

Turn Heel
Row 1 [RS]:
K18 [20], ssk, k1, turn.

Row 2 [WS]: Sl1, p7, p2tog, p1, turn.

Row 3 [RS]: Sl1, k8, ssk, k1, turn.

Row 4 [WS]: Sl1, p9, p2tog, p1, turn.

Row 5 [RS]: Sl1, k10, ssk, k1, turn.

Row 6 [WS]: Sl1, p11, p2tog, p1, turn.

Row 7 [RS]: Sl1, k12, ssk, k1, turn.

Row 8 [WS]: Sl1, p13, p2tog, p1, turn.

Row 9 [RS]: Sl1, k14, ssk, k1, turn.

Row 10 [WS]: Sl1, p15, p2tog, p1, turn.

Row 11 [RS]: Sl1, k16 ssk, k -[1], turn.

Row 12 [WS]: Sl1, p16 [17], p2tog, p -[1], turn.

Small Size: Proceed to gusset – 18 sts remain.

Large Size Only
RS - Row 13:
Sl1, k18, ssk, turn.

WS - Row 14: p19, p2tog, turn - 20 sts remain.

Gusset
Knit first 9 [10] heel sts. This point (center of heel) will now
mark the beginning of the round.
Using a new needle (now N1), k remaining 9 [10] sts of heel flap, then pick up 17 [19] sts along adjacent edge of heel flap.
Using next needle (N2), work across next 18 [20] sts in patt as established.
Using next needle (N3), work across next 20 [22] sts in patt as established.
Using remaining needle (N4), pick up 17 [19] sts along edge of heel flap, k last 9 [10] sts on heel flap – 90  [100] sts: N1 & N4: 26 [29]; N2: 18 [20]; N3: 20 [22].

Round 1 (Decrease Round): K to last 3 sts on N1, k2tog, p1; work sts on N2 & N3 in patt; p1, ssk, k to end of N4 – 2 sts decreased.
Round 2: K to last st on N1, p1; work sts on N2 & N3 in patt; p1, k to end of N4.

Repeat these two rounds until 17 [20] sts remain on both N1 & N4 – 72 [84] sts.

Foot
Continue even as established, working all sts on N2 & N3 in patt and purling last st of N1 and first st of N4 until 9 repeats of patt have been worked from cast on edge, ending with Round 5 [6] on 9th repeat.

Next Round: N1: K to last st, p1; N2: K2, p1, k1, p4 [5], RNDD, p4 [5], k1, p1; N3: k2, p1, k1, p4 [5], RNDD, p4 [5], k1, p1, k2; N4: p1, k across.

Round 2: N1: K to last st, p1; N2: TW, p1, k1, p 4[5], [purl into the front & back of next st] twice, p 4[5], k1, p1; N3: TW, p1, k1, p to last 4 sts, k1, p1, TW; N4: p1, knit across.

Round 3: N1: K to last st, p1; N2:  (k2, p1, k1),  p to last 2 sts, (k1, p1); N3: (k2, p1, k1), p to last 4 sts, (k1, p1, k2); N4: p1, knit to end.

Round 4: N1: K to last st, p1; N2: (TW, p1, k1), p to last 2 sts, (k1, p1); N3: (TW, p1, k1), p to last 4 sts, (k1, p1, TW); N4: p1, knit to end.

Repeat Rounds 3 & 4 once more. (You are continuing to work the twist sts at each edge and center.)

Toe
Round 1 (Decrease round): N1: K to last 3 sts, k2tog, p1; N2: K2, p1, ssk, k across; N3: k to last 5 sts, k2tog, p1, k2; N4: p1, ssk, k across.

Round 2: N1: K to last st, p1; N2: TW, p1, k across; N3: k to last 3 sts, p1, TW; N4: p1, k across.

Repeat these two rounds until 36 sts remain – 8 sts each on N1 & N4, 10 sts each on N2 & N3. With N4, k across all sts on N1. (This is now N1). Transfer sts on N2 & N3 to one needle (N2). Transfer one st from each end of N2 to N1 – 18 sts on each needle. Work Twisted Three-Needle Bindoff.
