Have you knit something from a Knitty pattern? Yahoo! You're
eligible to enter!
We've had four gorgeous calendars since
the contest began in
2006. It's a Knitty tradition
we couldn't think of
skipping! Now's your chance to share your photography with
all our readers!
We're looking for the
best, most enticing, amusing and well-shot photographs
of items knit from
Knitty patterns. We'll
select the 12 best
and publish them in
our fifth calendar,
this fall, for 2010. And the best of those 12 will go on
the cover and get some seriously fabulous knitworthy stuff!
Read on!

Here be the rules:
1. Items must have
been knit from a pattern published in any issue of Knitty. You
may have altered the pattern and/or yarn specified, as
long as the item is recognizable as the original Knitty
pattern. This contest is not about knitting
skill; it's about great photography.
2. Knitty staff are
not eligible for this contest [that means the catalyst,
editors, columnists, technical editor, ad manager and myself].
Contributors are eligible, but they cannot submit photographs
of their own Knitty-published designs.
3. Each entrant may
submit up to three [3] photographs in total. They can be
of the same item or different items. The photograph[s]
you submit will be low-resolution images. The winning entrants must be
able to submit the
winning photo[s] for publication in high-resolution [at
least 3 megapixels/300dpi] format. The photograph[s] must
be 11" wide x 8.5" tall.
4. 12 [twelve] winning
entries will be selected
by a panel of judges,
and the decisions of those judges are final. Any entrant
may win more than once. Each winner's sole compensation
in exchange for the use of their photograph in the Knitty
2010 calendar consists of the prize[s] described above.
There will be one prize awarded per winning photograph.
5. Entries must follow
submission rules laid out below. Those that do not follow
the rules will be disqualified. All entries must be sent
electronically; entries cannot be sent via regular postal
mail. Knitty is not responsible for lost or misdirected
entries.
6. Photos MAY have been previously published
on your blog or website.
7. All winning photos
[the grand-prize winner, 12 runners-up and all honorable
mentions] become the property of Knitty magazine, to be
used only for the purpose of this contest [website display
and publication in the calendar, if applicable].
8. Obscene, insulting,
inappropriate or offensive photographs will be disqualified.
Play nice, please.
9. Additions or changes to these rules may be made at
the editor's discretion at any time.
10. Winning images will only be used
by Knitty magazine
for the 2010 Knitty
calendar and will not be put on any other Knitty merchandise
such as t-shirts or mugs. Copyright of the image is retained
by the photographer; your entry in the contest means you
allow Knitty to use your photograph in the calendar [if
a winning image] or to publish it in the Honorable Mention
online gallery [if not a winning image]. Images may also
be featured in Knitty magazine itself to advertise the
calendar, and on the Knitty blog when the winners are announced.
11. Chances of winning vary depending
on the number of entries
received. Grand Prize
is valued at least
$200, with the final
prize amount to be
determined in October 2009. Runner-up
prizes are valued at
$25.
Knitted items can
be modelled or not -- it's the quality and impression
of the finished photograph we're looking for, so
be creative! The judges want to see photographs that
are bright, well-lit, clearly focused and not
grainy. Composition of the photograph is essential
-- boring "standing-against-a-tree-or-wall"
shots are discouraged.
Hints
that may sound cranky,
but are really meant
to be helpful:
Don't drape your knitted
thing over a tree or bush or wall.
Don't stick it on a
hanger.
Don't put it on a doll
or a pet
Don't lay it on your
carpet or bed or any other furniture, for that matter.
Be creative, have a lot of fun
with the process and think about what kind of image
you'd like to see hanging on your wall for a whole
month. Use fun props! Interesting locations!
Hint: This
contest is not
about how clearly
the knitted item
is shown or how
well it is knit
-- it's about how
great the photograph
is and how compelling
it is to look at.
We want 12 really
engaging, gorgeous
photographs. Take
a peek past winners to
see what we mean.
If it's a modelled garment, wear
complementary clothing and don't forget to do the
hair and makeup of the model[s], if appropriate.
Good luck, and we can't wait
to see what you come up with!
