I meet the coolest people

People, meet Kory. Read Kory's Livejournal entry for today. She did what I've been either too busy [that's the excuse I can be proud to give] or too chicken I'd wreck the things [more like the truth] to do. AND she tells all about it.

She dyed silk hankies with kool aid. And she spun 'em up! And the resulting skein looks a hell of a lot like a skein of Manos, but completely sheepfree.

Kory! How you spin so thick? Wheel? Do tell! And thanks huge for sharing. I've got to go buy a case of the stuff. I must have a pound of hankies waiting to be dyed. [After TNNA. I'm crazy, but I'm not nuts.]

OMG that's soooooooo cool. I must do this.

I gotta figure out how she drafted and spun it so thick.

Oh, I made the Knitty blog! I could plotz.

Dr. Steph and Amy, I think it spun up to DK/light worsted weight, depending on how thickly I drafted the hankies, so don't be fooled into thinking I've got the worsted weight skillz.

I did discover, though, that if you accidentally-on-purpose snag two hankies and draft them a la Amy's article, they will spun up nice and thick. The tooth on the silk enables the two hankies to draft into one another and make thicker roving. I would say that, on average, the roving I was making was a good 1/2" thick.

I spun on an old 1.2 oz Louet top-whorl drop spindle from my LYS and found after I wound the skein onto the swift that I didn't put as much twist into it as Amy put into hers. I knit up a little sample and it holds together loverly with that delightful silk sheen that we all covet and crave like so much chocolate.

Well, that I covet and crave like so much chocolate.

(I'll add these details to the entry for anyone else who pops by.)
