a rare political moment for me

people of Canada, listen up. if you think the liberal party is the only one touched by scandal, you are mistaken. every political party does things that the rest of us would find, at best, hard to live with. the difference this time is that what Mr. Chretien did is out in the open. you have no idea what secrets are in Mr. Harper's closet.

i cannot vote in the upcoming election, because I'm a US citizen. i voted in the last US election -- fat lot of good that did. i wish i could vote up here. but i'm going to uncharacteristically post something political that clearly states my position, because it's all i can do.

- if you appreciate living in a country that validates marriage between two loving parties, regardless of gender
- if you appreciate that our soldiers were not sent to a war most of the rest of the world objected to

think hard about who you vote for. the Conservatives are not an innocent party. you just can't see into their closets yet. you can, however, look back to what Conservative leader Mike Harris did to Ontario. we're still trying to rebuild the health-care and education systems.

what I love most about Canada is that we're our own country, and we've never been an uptight place to live. i really hope we stay that way.

Comments:
Wait.....you didn't vote for BUSH!? Amy!!!

*snork*

It really must be Friday the 13th. We wrote about the same thing.

Can I add to your rant? The pc's want to give a small cash stipend to parents of young kids for childcare. All the money in the world doesn't help when there are no childcare SPACES! The NDP and the Liberals are both building actual childcare spaces that we need.

The pc's also want to dismantle CPP and let us take care of our own retirement through RRSP's. God help us if we pick the wrong investments, or don't have any cash to put into any investments in the first place... ketchup soup anybody?

I think it's really sweet that you are a US citizin and yet you speek of "our soldiers" and "we're our own country". Have you considered applying for a citizinship so you can vote? Because it certainly sounds like you are one in all but name.

jacqui, good points. read dr. steph's post to find out more about what the conservatives plan to do to deconstruct the Canada we love.

Laurie,
Canada is my country. I'm Canadian in everything but passport. I've lived here since I was 6 years old. I'm married to a Canadian. I eat back bacon.

There are reasons I can't give up my US Citizenship, and they're all US-based reasons. Honestly, I wish I could. And I hope I still feel this way in two weeks, after our election is over.

I hope that those voting in the election will see what a bunch of crock the Conservative party is feeding them.

With that said, if the Conservatives win, I really think my admiration that you've been able to get so many things right where the US has not, will diminished.

does this mean that dual citizenship isn't possible any more?
i like to call myself a (legal) escapee from the states. I had been planning on just going dual when the time came....

megan, as i understand it, the problem isn't with the Canadian government. they don't mind dual citizenship status. but the US can take anything they wish [voting for another country's government, working at a government job, stating allegiance to another government] as reason to revoke your US citizenship. if you don't mind the risk, go for it. but there's no guarantee you get to keep the US if you add the CDN to your passport.

can you hear my big sigh?

Cheers to you too.
A fellow French Canadian who is hoping a "Green" candidate will present himself in her county !!!

!
That saddens me. I can't give up my US passport for numerous reasons....number one being that my family is there.
I can't trust the gov't down there not to make any kind of rash decisions. . . nothing surprises me any more, so a decision to revoke my citizenship if I attempt the dual thing would really be par for the course.
damn.

What baffles me is that people have decided to vote for the Conservatives because they don't like the Liberals. Everytime I hear someone say that I ask them if they believe in what the Conservatives have planned and their answer is of course "wel... no... but..." *rolls eyes*
Don't vote for someone if you don't like what they stand for. Seems to make perfect sense to me but I'm one of few it seems...

Wow - I've been really confused about the entire thing for some time. I really don't think that Paul Martin has been doing all that bad a job - I mean, he really has only been doing it for a year.
Good point with Harris - we are still recovering, but we have also come out of the heavy debt that was hanging over us for so long. I think that things can only look up if we give our government support, but also hold them accountable for their actions.

amen, Amy. the big C scares me too. (i'm in BC but lived in Ontario as a single mom during the Harris years).
