thanksgiving in the knitty household

maybe not what you expected...

i've lived in this country for a very, very long time. i will not tell you how long, that's how long. and yet, after all this time, i still cannot get used to thanksgiving coming so soon after labo[u]r day.

i understand that we're a wee smidge further north here [and most of this country is WAY further north than my old country], and that harvest time comes sooner. but to me, thanksgiving was always winter-coat weather, mandatory scarves and gloves and frozen ground.

so i'm rarely in the mood for turkey by Canadian thanksgiving. this year, i made good, meaty spaghetti sauce from scratch, and the kitchen, she is a mess. but yum.

---

projects started today: 1 [fetching, out of Schulana Supercotton in screaming pink]

projects ignored today: 2 [ongoing widdershins/judy sock in Sock Candy, to be saved for s&b on wednesday; zimmermann vest that just needs seaming, and i don't want to mess it up]

next up, i want to do something with the can of pumpkin i bought yesterday. these look yummy, but i bet you guys have something even better. a little delectable sweetie, cookie, something that i could bake? please feel free to fill the comments with recipes. i do have a vintage 1970s avocado kitchenaid mixer, so i am fully equipped for tough mixing. :-)

also, 18 days till my birthday.

Comments:
On the flipside, I can't imagine Thanksgiving happening only a month before Christmas.

I've got a recipe for what amounts to pumpkin angelfood cake with cream cheese icing. It's rather long and involves separating almost a dozen eggs and whipping the egg whites, etc. But if you want it, e-mail me and it's yours.

I really like the pumpkin bread pudding recipe I found in a magazine last year. If it sounds interesting, I can send you the recipe.

This is a favorite with family and friends out here on the West Coast. I can't get enough of it.

Pumpkin in a can? Oh Amy....I'm not sure if we can be friends anymore.

But mum did make an amazingly fantastic pumpkin cheesecake this weekend. It was more savory than sweet. You may want to Google for recipes as I'm not sure whose she used.

pumpkin in a can has to be okay if nigella can put KETCHUP in her chili recipe. (not kidding. see her new series "Nigella Feasts" for proof.)

i do make my own cranberry sauce from scratch, though. am i redeemed?

Yes I made pumpkin chessecake too. y u m.

And yes I f**king baked, boiled , blended, sived, drank, but it was worth it,(I think)

Made the whole (25lb.turkey) dinner while all the family was off hiking, I was the hero,(toast to the chefs me and Ken)........... drank more after dinner.

The greatest most wonderful recipe for pumpkin? Pumpkin chocolate chip cookies. I make them all the time and people rave about them--they can't believe how great they are.

Email me if you want the recipe. I don't know if copyright issues will allow me to type the whole thing in a blog comment. :D

Hi Amy,

Is that a Oct 27th BD?? If so, so is mine! Thought it worth delurking:)

I hear you on photoshoots! I just finished "12 Months of Knitting" for Potter Craft and no matter how much I thought I was prepared, I was always in a tailspin the day of a photoshoot, doing last minute weaving in of ends, or in some cases, actually knitting! Congrats on what looked to be a successful day! Good luck with BGK2!

"Deer Hunting Cookies" from northern MN - uff da, they're delish!

1 cup brown sugar
1 can of pumpkin (smaller can maybe 15 oz?)
1/2 cup cooking oil
1 tsp. vanilla

2 cups flour
1 tsp soda
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp cloves
1/4 tsp ginger
1 tsp cinnamon
Raisins and walnuts as desired

Mix first ingredients together and then add dry ingredients. Dough will be cake-like and sticky.
Drop by tablespoonfuls onto greased cookie sheet.
Bake at 375 degrees until done (maybe 8-10 minutes) but don't overbake (edges will be light brown).

Frost with:
Cream Cheese Frosting:
Mix 1/4 block softened cream cheese with 2 T butter.
Add 1 1/2 to 2 cups powdered sugar
Then add milk slowly while mixing
to a smooth consistency.
Add 1/4 tsp vanilla and pinch of salt

Good Afternoon, I just wanted to let you know that I love your site and refer many of my customers to it. I have enjoyed several of the patterns and wish I had more time, but being a shop owner in Loveland, Colorado, there just isn't enough time to complete all my projects. I just wanted to say thanks for offering such great patterns. Monika

Hey there, So this has really nothing to do with your post but I wanted to tell you that I love this site. But, I clicked on a link from knitty.com that led me to fuzzy galores' site where I placed an order. I have sent them a bunch of emails but have gotten no response. Do you have any ideas how to get a hold of them to either get my money back or get what I ordered? If not, you may want to take the link off of knitty.com.

Cheers

I made this pumpkin gooey butter cake for my husband's employees last year at Christmas, and they all loved it so much that they have begged me to make it again this year. I'm not much for pumpkin, but I loves me some gooey butter cake.

OMG...I have a Scorpio complex. They are (supposedly) not the nicest sign. We'll have to work at dispelling that myth.
Yes, DKC, but book not out till Winter 06/07. :( My deadline was Oct 1st and then they "work" at it for a year. Just preparing another proposal while the stress is still fresh! I will try to make Mar 28th! Love the title "No sheep for you".

I make those pumpkin cupcakes all the time and let me say that they are my most requested bake good in my office. I substitute ground flax and water mixture for eggs (I work with someone who is allergic to them) and yum, so fantastic. Please do make them- you'll love them.

Thanksgiving is my personal favorite. The grand dinner with the turkey and the pies later on are really great. I mean it's one of those events where we all spend time with family and close friends. And not to mention the decorations and the themes. It's one fun filled time for the entire family. You can find a lot of suggestions and ideas on Thanksgiving at this Thanksgiving Blog. Check it out, it's filled with Thanksgiving fun.
