what is up with that R?

In my knitting-related work, I'm "Amy R Singer". But why? I'm so not the kind of person that goes in for middle initial-ness, but I had to. Here is why:

1. When I was writing Knit Wit, searching "amy singer" on amazon produced books like this and this. The most famous webby Amy Singer is a lawyer. She's also not me. I figured I'd have to do something to differentiate us all or else searching would be annoying and more than a little confusing. As far as I can tell, I'm the only Amy R Singer on the web -- mission accomplished.

2. My full last name is actually two names, no hyphen, and we put hub's last name before mine...and we both took that name. Hub and I are weird like that. His name is the R part. Mine is the Singer.

3. So what does the R stand for? Not telling. I don't imagine I've got real stalkers [not the nice kind like Karen, who knit you Nauties and hug you], but just in case, I like to make it harder for them to find me.

Thus endeth your trivial factoid of the day.

Admit it. The 'R' is for Redonculous. Oh yeah baby. Not a real word but it's really fun to say. ;^)

I'm a dork. I got really excited that you mentioned my name. :)

All you would have had to do is use "Amy Knitty" as your nom de plume and we would all know who you are!

I was contemplating taking my fiance's name as my middle name and using my middle name more often once we tied the knot.
i'm still not sure but it's nice to know that there are people out there who kept their name but also took their partner's name.
:o)

When I got married I really wanted to have my name legally become my first name, then my maiden name (replacing my original middle name), then my husband's last name. They wouldn't let me do it, though. The only way NY state would allow me to use both last names in my official, legal name was with a hyphen, and since we're talking about seven total syllables, that was out of the question.

Sigh. Yet another reason to wish I lived in Canada.

I think Kate talked to the wrong person or something...it seems odd that she couldn't change her name to whatever the heck she wanted to. Weird.

And you know, I was just wondering about that R yesterday. I always sign stuff with my middle initial because my nickname is my initials, so it seems important to me to emphasize it.

if NY state is like Ontario, you can only do so much for free when you change your name for marriage. if you want to change your name to bleeble78, you have to go to court and stuff. at least up here.

[am i right, kate?]

I got married last summer but still haven't changed my name yet because here in Holland where I happen to live, they don't let you legally change your name - at all. You can use your hubands name casually, but that's it.

I always went by Jennifer L. Last-Name b/c there are lots and lots of Jennifers with the same last name is me, enough to occassionally get phone calls and mail for these other people. But my husband's last name begins with an O' so I'm trying to decide of I should be JLO or drop the L all together. Jennifer L O' looks a bit busy.

NICE!!
there's a J.LO in Holland!!!
:o)heehee!

Well, I think you've surpassed the lawyer Amy Singer anyway, because if you actually search for Amy Singer, your books are the top results. Huzzah! Amy Knitty takes over the world one search engine at a time!

This is totally unrelated to the name thing, but I just had to tell you that I adore the Nautie pattern. Because it is how I found Knitty! There was a link to it somewhere else on the web (I think it was in the Friday Ark, a blog roundup of animal related posts once a week) and it looked cool so I decided to try knitting it.

Followed by checking out the rest of the site and falling madly in love with knitting, and Knitty. So Yay for Nautie!

Ha! How awesome. Zak and I were both going to hyphenate and then legally change our names, but... we haven't. Yet? Maybe we still will. I just didn't change my name, in the end. I love that you guys did that. :)
