pride spreads

Been thinking about Pride a lot lately. I'm extremely proud to live in a country where people of every sexuality feel comfortable being themselves and have the same rights as everyone else in the country. Their pride is rubbing off on me.

Now, I'm not going to usurp Pride [with a capital P] for my own purposes, but as it's been half of my inspiration for a little shakeup in AmyKnitty world, I needed to mention it.

On Friday, AmyBoogie posted a link to this: A Fat Rant. A beautiful thing, created by Joy Nash, about something close to my heart [and muffintop]. This was the other half of the inspiration thingy. Joy says a lot of good stuff in this video, and if you haven't seen it yet, you must go. Now. Watch it all, and listen carefully. Because she's right.

Don't lecture me about how I co-wrote a book with Jillian about this stuff already. I totally believe in it, know it's right and can see it clearly for others. I just have trouble seeing this clearly for myself.

So screw it. Today I've been going around the web and updating my icon. Because although I am very fond of this picture, which shows me the night before I launched Knitty in 2002, full of optimism, excitement and much less muffintop...

...it hasn't looked like what I see in the mirror for a while. It's been almost 5 years since that was taken and life goes on, dunnit?

This is me now.

I like this picture, too. I think Karen took it for me at the Knit Out in NY last fall. It was a good hair day and I'm smiling. This is me.

I heard the part about the fitness thing, too, Joy. Went kayaking yesterday. Working on it.

Okay, enough already. Back to work.

Happy Pride, Everyone!

I like the "current Amy" pic - your happiness is so obviously deep & genuine and you look a lot less like a deer caught in the headlights! Knitty suits you!!

"deer in the headlights". snork. that's pretty much it, actually. 5 bonus points for wannietta! :-)

The new picture looks great!

Love, love, love the new picture.

Oh wow. Thank you so much for linking that video. It's awesome! I have to put it up too. :)

It would seem to have been a very good five years for you -- that smile is the real deal! And perspective is a true sign of maturity; some women my age dye their hair, some savor their whiteness and are hardly less content. We need choice in all the matters that surround us. On to the next five -- and more.

Look at that gorgeous smile! :-)

I saw Joy's video quite a while ago, and still love it. Got to own what you've got and take care of it, no matter how it changes. I've been small, big (width-wise, dude. I'm five feet tall. Beyond the five feet, there is no "there" there...)and then small again, and I've been floppily small and fit as hell but big. Now I'm just trying to take care of what I have and not be ashamed of it.

Slinky Great Big Sea helps. :-)

You are beautiful,always!

The new picture is lovely and captures your happy warmth and confidence.

Ooh, love the current picture--it's got a joie de vivre that's missing from the first one. xoxo! -A

That is an even better photo than your old one. You look like you are having so much more fun! Radiant!

I think all women should embrace themselves—no matter what their size—we all seem to dwell on our so-called bad qualities. Too bad it took me until I had a baby or two to appreciate who I was, and finally embrace who I am. I have worked just as hard (or harder) for every strechmark, sag and curve as I have for every muscle. Thank you for sharing this link.

I love the new shot. Very happy and confident!

You go girl! Pride for all!

I LOVE the new photo. I always thought the old one looked a little too much like a mug shot.

I love the new pic. Happy, pretty Amy. :)

I know I am not the first to say it but your more recent picture is much better. It is brighter and so are you. Your smiles shows more of the person I like to think you are. I know everyone has good and bad days but I have met you two or three times now at various knitting things (with Connie fom Pick Up Sticks) and you are so friendly and positive. That smile says it all.

I love that picture! HI CHICA!

That is a good picture! And if you hadn't said anything about...er..muffintop, it wouldn't have entered my mind. Be comfortable in your skin and damn the torpedos...to mangle a quote. Frankly I find the whole "looks" discussion irritating. we should all strive to be healthy. End of statment. Sumo wrestlers are probably healthier than many of us because they exercise regularly. It's not the weight that is the problem. and that's my 2 cents worth.

Well HELLOOO hottie!!

Yeah for being proud and fat positive. Have you ever seen this community?

Happy Spinning!

shit I don't even know how to get a picture of me on this computer thingy.

Missing you come and spin on wed.

I love that new picture of you. It's beautiful.

And thank you for thank link. That was a brilliant piece, and something I need to start trying to apply in my own life.

Nice picture; it shows one of the best things that I remember about you...your smile. By the way, just finished reading No Sheep (cover to cover) and it rocks! Great information on non-wools and very well written; I would recommend anyone add it to their library.

Just coming out of the woodwork to say: There is the picture of a beautiful woman who looks comfortable in her own skin! The old photo is cute, it's true, but you're right. You don't look like that any more. The new photo is of the Amy I would recognise at an event. And I would be totally starstruck.

Go, get 'em, Beautiful!

Like the other posters, I also prefer your "new" icon. You have a wonderful, genuine, and welcoming smile... good on you for showing it off and for being comfortable in your own skin. Lead us by example! :-)

Congratulations on taking a very hard step. In order to love and accept who we are we have to be willing to admit the truth to ourselves. I think that can be hardest in the area of body image. Go, girl. You're doing it!

Happy Pride to you as well! Great post, thanks. BTW--- you look fab in the new photo, love it!

Thanks for the link. I needed that. New picture so much prettier. I am clueless about the muffin top thing didn't get it but oh well. Oh so have to say so upset that I miss seeing you in MN.

You look beautiful! I love the new picture :)

Go Amy! I love your pic...infact, I just picked up the new(yeah I'm later then most) interweave tonight. It's my first and was plesantly surprised to see your picture as I was flipping through (love the scarf..couldn't wait to get home and cast on!!!). As far as your picture from 5 years ago....don't we all tote around a picture in our head from when we were our "best" looking!?! You were beautiful then, are now and I'm sure you'll be even more 5yrs from now!

You look fab - like always! Smooches.

Beautiful is as beautiful does. You have given all of us your gifts of humor and creativity and humility--thanks for sharing the new gift of your new smile! And cool glasses. Cheers from a new knitty.com addict.

Me likes the current Amypic better than the former, but I've always loved you for you, darlin'

And previous commenters are right--you look MUCH happier in the current pic, and sorry, but skinny people scare me (most need to eat something...LOL)

MWAH--I kees you now

Hey, that new pic is fantastic! You look beautiful and very happy. (Personally I like the new one better than the old one after comparison) And about the lecture, sometimes it's easier to help someone else than to take your own advice. *grin* So shoosh now and just be your fantastic self!!

You're gorgeous.
I've seen you in person, you're awesome as a whole and not just your face. It's the way you walk and carry yourself, the pride shows.
All the Best to you, Amy!
BTW, my distorted letters in the box below contain "ssk" today! :)

Loved the link! And the new picture, although I miss your eyes...;)
