blueberry love + flaaaaridaaaaah

way back when my gall bladder and i broke up, the Purlescence girls sent me a get-well love package. it worked! :-)

the sparkly stuff on the right is Blue Heron Rayon Metallic in the deliciously named color Blueberry. i've had it hanging in front of my desk since it arrived and last night, a little lost without a quick-knit sweater to work on, i cracked it open and cast on for the simplest thing ever: a triangular shawl in garter stitch based on the Tuscany silhouette. perfect travel knitting and so beautiful to look at.

---

travel knitting? why, yes. this is very odd to me, but i'm going to florida. this is something many people do every winter, but i've never gotten to be one of them. until this year, when my chicago-based parents got all, "winter is too cold! we must escape!" and rented a place on the gulf side for the whole month. the whole fam has been invited to visit sometime during the span, and my week starts tomorrow.

luckily for me, the house has wi-fi, because i'm full-on into spring Knitty mode and can't stop. but it will be mighty nice to take breaks and such by the pool in the backyard. wow.

so...i'm not into touristy stuff, but is there some amazing fibery thing i can't miss that's gulf-side, an hour or so south of Tampa?

hub's staying home to concentrate on programming, watch many boring documentaries and fuss over the bunnies.

psst:

yup, that's color accurate. can you stand it?

Not touristy, but you might enjoy the Salvador Dali museum in St Petersberg. My Florida experience is 20 years out of date, so that's all I've got.

Droool. I LOVE the sparkly!

Have an awesome time in Florida. I have no suggestions besides Shuffleboard (which I actually love ... secretly I think I'm a 90-year-old Snowbird).

The Florida State Fair is happening in Tampa until Feb 18th. Don't know about their "Fibery" selection.

I've never had much desire to head to Florida either, but with this weather? I'm so jealous! Enjoy the sunshine and have a great time!

CAN I COME TOO???

There's a yarn shop in St. Pete on, er, something like 4th or 5th Ave. I think. It appeared right after I moved to Palm Harbor from St. Pete, so I'm not sure where it is, and have never been there ... but I hears things, yessss, I hears...

Uncommon Threads in Palm Harbor has spinnyfibers, too, if you need (and looms and some wheels and hand-turned spindles ... oh, and yarn ;)). It's on US 19, right between Curlew and Tampa roads. Palm Harbor is probably within reasonable driving distance, depending on where exactly you are. (It takes half an hour to get there from northish St. Pete in good traffic.)

Weather's kind of rainy/cloudy lately, too, isn't it? Where are you, anyway? ;)

Amy-
The Gulf side is fabulous. We've gone to MN Twins Spring Training for several years and love it! Boston Red Sox also winter in Ft. Myers. Check out Wild Child Gallery in Matlacha (on the road to Pine Island from Ft. Myers.) Ding Darling State Park on Sanibel is great. Have a great trip!

Great yarn shop in Sarasota, called the Stitching Bee, if I remember correctly. Its near the mall, right off of rt 41.

There's a yarn shop in St. Petersburg at Central Ave in the 70s, called needles and knobs. They're very close to the gulf beaches.

If you end up in St. Petersburg, would it be possible to do some kind of informal class?

have fun in FL, especially this time of the year. Its glorious!

Blueberry yumminess! I love the way the Rayon Metallic looks in garter st. I knit a Spanish Dancer in the Spanish Dancer colorway.... delicious! Glad you're enjoying it. Miss you! Mwah!

Love the colors.

May I ask what pattern you are working from, and might you tell me ;-)?

That's it -- the one on Central in St. Pete. Neeed to go. Also a yarn shop in Tampa called Knit 'N' Knibble...

The shop in Sarasota near the mall is The Spinning Wheel on Siesta Drive - it's great! If you get as far south as Naples (about 3 hours south of Tampa) Knitting with Nancy is my favorite. Enjoy our amazing weather! Welcome to the Sunshine State!!!
Shawn

That color is so delicious. I've seen little tiny pictures of that yarn, but didn't really know what it looked like. Thank you for enlightening me.

You will have a wonderful time. I just got back and the weather was gorgeous. Hit Sanibel for a day if you have the time...

bring me back some Florida gum please. I ate all my candies from england.....strong minty ones yum.

Gum please. thank you. love you. miss you.

When I lived in Florida, I made regular trips to the Knit 'n Knibble in Tampa. (This was an hour and a half from my Avon Park home.)

Gorgeous yarn!!! Hope it's as soft as it is beautiful. I live in Florida, but I'm 2-plus hours north and east of your vacation home and completely unfamiliar with the goings-on down there. Hope you have a terrific time, tho!

That yarn have my mouth watering, I got to check my LYS for it. I but I hope you have a wonderful time in Florida.

Two things in Sarasota that I can recommend: The Ringling Estate, including the restored Ringling mansion, the Circus Museums, and a rose garden (http://www.ringling.org/), and the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens (http://www.selby.org/), which has a huge collection of orchids in addition to thousands of other tropical plants. Both are on the water. Enjoy your trip!

Ooh, the colors are very rich. Beautiful stuff! Enjoy your time in Florida. :)

What is the gauge of your blueberry? Would it be suitable for the Mystic Light Shawl? So sparkly!

I live in Sarasota, and the Spinning Wheel is great and so is Eye of the Needle. I also travel to Tampa to Knit n Knibble!! I read your blog religiously and love it!!! If it's Sarasota where you'll be, The Ringling Museum and Selby Gardens are awesome along with a Sculpture on the Bay exhibit. Let me know if you need further info...glad to help. By the way, it will be in the 80's this weekend!!!!

Is the other yarn in your picture some K1C2 2nd Time Cotton? It looks great, too. Any plans for it? I made a short-sleeve tunic for my daughter out of it: warm, but cool!

I'm in Sarasota, too! There is a nice knitting/antique combo shop on Fruitville Road, not far from the beaches called Picasso's Moon. The lady there did the knitting props for the pre-broadway production of Tale of Two Cites. Plus, since the other half of the store is full of crazy stuff, you can browse fiber wonderfulness while other unenlightened folks have something else to look at... LOL!
