if you are a US citizen, you have only one thing to do today.

and it's not knitting*.

It's not just your right to vote, it's your responsibility as a citizen of the United States. Drop me a comment when you're done and I will give you a yay out loud in the Knitty offices!

I voted absentee in September. Now it's just the waiting.

*in case there's a line up at your polling station, you should totally bring your knitting. I would!

Given the lines I saw on my way to work, I'm so glad I voted absentee - though not quite as far back as you did!

Hey, I voted this morning already! And the line wasn't even long enough to bother bringing my knitting. :~( Frankly, the line was longer at Dunkin' Donuts. So much for media hype.

Just got back from voting in Northern Virginia (there was almost no line)!

I voted as I walked past my polling place on the way to work at 9:30. I had been worrying about when to go (lunch break? wait until after work?) but there was NO LINE, so I was in and out in about 3 minutes. My husband waited 1 1/2 hours to vote at the same spot at 6 AM. Haha. Pays to sleep in, I say!

I voted at 7:30 this morning at my polling location, and was in and out in 15 minutes. Woot!

You bet I did! Went at 6, and yeah, should have waited maybe 30 minutes and missed the line, but it wasn't bad. Got my free Starbucks then.

Voted at 6 am...then came home and knit!

I arrived at the polls at about 7:15 and voted at about 7:45. While in line I said to my friend "I should have brought my coffee... " He said "What? Your knitting?" I said "Oh, that would have been an even better idea!" If I had my coffee, I might have thought of that. :-)

I voted in Atlanta and was in line long enough to add a few inches to my marvelous cashmere mobius... time well spent!

Voted around 7:45 here in Northern NM, no wait, although there were more people at the polls than I usually see.

Voted in Virginia at 9am this morning! Perfect timing since the "before work" rush has just thinned out. Got in and out in 5 minutes! I didn't even have time to knit what I brought.

Voted before work, now just trying to find time to grab my free Ben & Jerry's : )

I voted early in NC. We're a swing state this year....yeah baby!!! Now settling in with my knitting in front of the tv, and will hardly move until we have a new Pres!

Hubby and I got there just as the polls opened at 7. We were done by 8 - I got 8 or 10 rows done on my liberated laceweight project!

Voted in Ohio at 8 am; it took an hour to make it through the line. It was awesome to see LOTS of people there of many different backgrounds...very encouraging to see the level of engagement in my community. Yay for democracy!!

I voted at 7:30 this a.m. There was a line but it was well worth the wait.

I voted by mail a few weeks ago. I have voted in every election since I came of age...uh...several elections ago. (I am not saying how many, but I didn't vote for Nixon....)

I was at my polling place at 7:05, knitting in hand. Had to wait about 30 minutes, even at that early hour! A few folks commented about my knitting (I was working on the back of Forestry). I was wearing my Branching Out and a woman wanted to know where the pattern came from, so I told her all about Knitty.com, which she didn't know about (How could that be??!!!)

I can hardly concentrate on my work today, I am so on pins and needles.

I didn't go get a free coffee at Starbucks. Instead, I bought a coffee and croissant at a locally owned cafe. Nothing against Starbucks, but I feel it's important to support my neighbors whose unique businesses make my town special.

every single person here at lorna's laces voted this morning!!! including kylie who just became a citizen and voted for the very first time!!!

I voted at 6:15 this morning and there was already a line! I'm wearing my "I Voted" sticker and I'm eagerly awaiting the results.

Count me in! No line at 10:15, but a steady stream of people walking to and from. Very encouraging!

No line at 7:50, but a steady trickle of voters. Apparently there had been a huge line when it opened. Lots of people voting before work.

I voted last week - whew hop!
Emily S, TN

I voted by mail weeks ago, but am still busy today encouraging Californians to vote no on prop 8!

I voted by absentee ballot yesterday, here in WA.

There were 2 lines at my polling place and my half of the alphabet had a very short line. If I had been in the other half of the alphabet, my knitting would have had to come out of my purse while I waited. I was #604 at slightly after 9 AM according to the counting machine.

I voted here in MA... no line, pet some dogs, came away very disappointed they didn't have any "I voted" stickers :)

I voted! WHOOOOO!

I voted this morning here in Jersey City, N.J. Waited only five minutes, but there was a steady trickle of voters.

I voted this morning at 7 a.m. I went to bed early, and got up early feeling like a little girl on Christmas morning, only so very nervous too. I was #25 in my district (Catskill, NY) and I was in and out in less than 5 minutes!I even brought my drop spindle and some silk in case there was a big line, but nope. My biggest wait was trying to find which table had my name in their book. The nice older ladies who manned the tables thought I was too cute with my big goofy smile.

Go-Bama, Go!

35 minutes at 8:45 am - non-peak hours, am I glad I planned to work late tonight - no vote late!

Voted in October, absentee (we were traveling over this weekend and wanted to make sure we wouldn't miss it if there was a travel glitch).

Now busy praying for my world and my country and my new president-elect. Whoever he turns out to be.

In oregon we vote via mail - So we voted several weeks ago! and I got my hubby registered to vote again and he did too!!!

I have cast my vote. Now to spend the rest of the day chewing on my fingernails.

Dropped off my absentee ballot yesterday. My sister is actually helping with the polls today. There was a part in her code of conduct as a worker that specifically talked about knitting. Apparently it's fine as long as you keep it off the table.

I voted and didn't have to wait in line. One of the many perks of having a flexible schedule. heh

I have voted and so has my husband! Hooray!

i voted this morning in brooklyn - the line was around the block! i had a husband with me, but the knitting was in my purse in case we ran out of stuff to talk about in our 1 1/2 hour wait.

I voted and used my 45-minute queue wait to make great progress on a baby cap for a colleague's new grandson. Voting + Knitting = Perfect Morning!

I had the pleasure of walking to my polling place today. There was no line but I have my knitting with me just in case. And I got my "I Voted!" sticker which (besides letting my voice be heard) is the best part!

no line, just voted at 12 noon!

I voted at 8 am this morning and I was the 133rd voter! I only had to wait in line for about 5-10 minutes. My husband got in line 20 mintues before the polls opened and he was the 12th voter.

I voted! (The line took over an hour but it was too early to knit - so we just stood in the sun and admired all the voters!)

I voted around 11 AM in Ohio! Go Obama!

I did my mail in ballot last week, I just want the ads to be over

I voted absentee as well. But I'm wearing my sticker today that came with my ballot!

We got up 45 minutes early to vote this morning. A peaceful 5 minute walk, 25 minutes in line, and another 5 minute walk back to the house to grab breakfast before leaving for work. I knit on my Plain Ribbed Sock in line.

Mailed mine a week ago.

I voted early last week. Hooray for early voting!! Now just holding my breath and waiting.

Voted! I had my knitting packed and ready, but there was no line at my district. In the other district, in the same building, the line snaked down the block.

Tonight during the returns coverage: time to tackle only the most mindless of knitting.

Commenting to get my "Yay!" from Amy: I voted this morning before work & was #91 at my spot. It took about an hour to get into the booth, but I didn't mind - it was great to see so many people turned out. :)

I voted on the way to work this morning! Only took half an hour. On the way to work I saw another precint that had people two-by-two lined up around the block. Wow!

I havent voted yet, but am leaving work early to go, so you can save my yay for about 3:30pm

My county in Colorado has mail in ballot tracking online, so I know my ballot was counted - on October 27th :-)

voted this morning--no line at all--but plenty of people, voting and helping out.

Give another yay! I voted at 6:45 am - no line! Make that two yay's. I took my mom with me and she voted too.

I voted at 7am this morning! I had to wai 45 minutes to get in.... here's a picture of the line on my blog...
http://javajem.blogspot.com

I voted in Michigan! No line at just after 11:30... I just beat the lunch crew.

I voted absentee about a week ago. I hope the guy running for County Commissioner wins, then maybe I can stop feeling guilty for our llamas spitting on him that one time.

I had a two hour wait to vote today and was very happy to do so. I was knitting a plain vanilla sock while waiting.

I voted early to avoid the lines. (not that there were any when I drove past my polling location).

Got in line at 6am, knitted for 45 minutes, then voted! One person in line commented, "now there's a smart lady, she brought her knitting."

YEAH Amy absentee voter!!!

Totally had a bag packed for anticipated lines. Snacks and activities for 2 yo in tow, stockinette knitting for me...and whisked in and out in like 5 minutes. Volunteers reported lines were HUGE this morning, but by lunch time they had plenty of time to squeeze fat 2 yo cheeks and festoon him with stickers for helping mom vote.

YEAH voting day!

Dude, I totally voted this morning in San Diego. LOVED IT!

I voted! No real line at ~10 a.m., although there was a slight mix-up...our polling place had 2 precincts, and we tried to check in for the wrong one. Oops. But once we did check in, no problem.

And by "we", I mean me and my boyfriend, who I'm SO proud of because he actually registered to vote this year and then voted! Amy, please give Ray an extra yay, okay? :)

Then I walked home, stopping by Starbucks on the way. :)

voted this morning - there was still a line reaching to the corner when I got there at 10:30, but it moved quickly - it took me maybe 20 minutes altogether.

It's probably the last time we in nyc will get to use the antiquated big chunky voting machine with the big red lever and all the switches. I'll miss it.

Vote in North suburban Chicago at 9:05 this morning. Steady traffic but no waiting. My vote was #322 in the machine. That's a LOT of votes for my part of town. I can't wait to see what the number is at 5:00PM when my daughter votes for the first time ever (she turned 18 last Monday).

Vote, vote, vote, vote@!@!!!@!

I voted early (stood in line for 1.5 hours on Saturday, without my knitting - not very bright of me).

I voted, (brought my sock in progress but didn't have to wait in line) and then came home and cast on a mobius. Thanks for yesterdays inspirational YouTube link.

I voted here in small-town NH at 8:30 this morning. No line. They moved the voting place from town hall to the school this year, for more space, and I guess it worked, or else we missed the morning rush! DH was with me; he was only a minute or so slower than I was.

When I arrived at 7:10 here in southeastern Michigan, the line was out to the road. Between the time we got in line and the time we returned to the car, having been voters #994 & 995, 90 minutes had elapsed. Sure was glad I had my mittens with me to knit on!

I voted in CA this morning by dropping my mail-in ballot at the polling place after not getting it in the mail in time. I'm not planning to track the results at least until tonight after my toddler goes to bed.

Very bizarrely, there was actually a line in tiny-town Massachusetts at 7am.
I voted, came home, and cast on a moebius!

Two more to add - me and The Mike!

We've proudly done our civic duty here in San Luis Obispo, CA. Although I brought knitting, there was absolutely no line at all - in and out, easy peasy.

YAY!

April (and Mike) McLaughlin

i cast (my vote) on! now I'm hoping for regime change!

I voted at 12:30, took a sock and didn't get to work on it - no line whatsoever. But they were very well organized, and it's a relatively small town.

I voted last Friday!!!

I voted absentee as well. See if you can guess.

I had moved since the last presidential election, so had to re-register. I did so at a local library in our county (Cook in Illinois) on the next-to-last-day to do so. My husband registered the next (last) day at the city hall where we live. We went to vote today and his form was in the book--mine was not. [There was not much of a line at 11 a.m.] After much searching and a phone call to the county Hot-Line, it was determined I was registered at a different (!) precinct, so we had to go there. After my husband voted, off we went. At that polling place, they had two books of forms--but I wasn't in either. So, I said, how about the Federal Only ballot? Oh, they said, you have to go back to your real precinct. I almost decided to just forget it, but back to the other precinct we went. There, they called the Hot-Line again and found out my record said "North" instead of "South" and that I was duly registered and to let me have the full ballot. They did. I tried an electronic--instead of paper--ballot, and it was very easy. It would have gone faster if we hadn't had to vote to retain (or not) 30 or so judges. I will have to re-register to make sure the address change went through.

We get to vote by mail in Oregon. I turned in my ballot the day after I got it in the mail! W00t

its election day! everybody say YEAH!
I voted early this morning in omaha!
if obama wins omaha and gets our electoral vote, i will die from the excited!
WHOOOT!!!!

we have champagne ready to celebrate...or drown our sorrrows..either way...

I cast my vote at lunchtime. No knitting, but no wait time either - something I was very glad of, as I had my six and three years old daughters with me!

I've been voting since I was 18. Normally, I can get in and out of my polling place in 20 minutes. Today, it was an hour. I didn't mind, though. Making history takes time.

Wish I'd thought to bring some knitting with me while waiting in line.

I voted early and dropped off the ballot yesterday. (yeah for vote by mail!)

If we had in person voting, I would have brought my knitting.

I brought my Lace Ribbon scarf to work on in line while waiting to vote early last Friday. I got a lot of comments and it helped pass the time. It took us a little over 3 hours!

Voted here in the Bronx at 7:40 am - after getting in line at about 6:30. The line was out the door. I've never seen it like that in all the years I've been voting. More importantly, even though I live in a very racially mixed neighborhood, I've never seen so many African-Americans at the poll. I hope this can be another step towards healing the racial divisiveness in this country.

Voted at 10 this morning! Yay!

done!

Only a 4 person wait this afternoon when I went. Not bad at all. :)

I voted early last week :) I keep obsessively checking CNN when I KNOW nothing will have changed until the polls start closing. I really want it to be over, but I also really dread what I will feel if my cause looses. The conflicting emotions and nervousness are making it hard to focus and work.

I say loud and proud that I VOTED!! Now I'm just anxiously waiting for the results.

Voted! Yay! Things were brisk here on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, but we tend to take our GOTV seriously anyway. (Housemate tells me that we were recently declared "the bluest district in the US" by CNN or some such; they had a camera crew out front of the grocery store 'round the corner and everything.)

I love to go vote in person--so I did! And, for the first time in the past 6 years I've lived in my town, there was a LINE! Yay!

I voted this morning. Then I went home and knit :)

I voted after work, and there was no line at all. Lucky me! I even brought my knitting!!

This would be the second voting I've ever done. It is nice to be a US citizen!!!

I voted this morning, and I didn't have to wait in line at all! I'll be knitting all night to keep from chewing off my fingernails while I anxiously await the results.

I voted today and took my knitting! I was totally glad I did because I had to wait about an hour..so much got done on my sock!

Funny a lady about 5 up from me was crocheting a baby blanket while in line! Great minds think alike!

Voted at 8 am. It was a beautiful day to be knitting in the waiting line.

The deed is done. I went with a good book, but it was 10.30, and though there were quite a few people, there was no real wait. Now the waiting ... (Bless McCain for choosing Palin. I worry how it would have gone had he picked a viable candidate.) the idea of a Republican win unravels my being.

I voted and I knit while I waited in line.
-- Becka

i voted this morning!

I voted this morning, knitting in hand. The elderly Somali women in front of my got the biggest kick out it.

I voted in Maryland at lunch time and there was not even time to remove my knitting from my bag. The only one in line was my husband because we walked in together.

voted absentee...not the same excitement as voting the day of at the polls, but I got to have my say all the same.

I thought the lines after work would be long, so I didn't finish my sock on the train, saving it for the voting line.. And then there was no line! Yay for voting!

I had heard the stories about the long lines, so I took TWO knitting projects to keep me occupied. When I got to the polling place, there was a moderate line outside but not quite around the building. Turns out, that was for another precinct (my polling place hosts four precincts). There were only two people ahead of me for my precinct, so I was in and out without even touching the knitting!

I actually voted a couple of weeks ago. Early voting rocks!

Voted at 8am this morning and made sure I was knitting something blue as I stood in line. All told it only took an hour (downtown Seattle).

Here's keeping my fingers crossed!!

Oh, yeah, baby, I voted, and I voted BLUE! It's history.

My voting location is in the men's shower stalls inside the park fieldhouse where I live, and yes, I still went and voted. I used one hand to hold my free "I Voted" Starbucks coffee and the other to do touch screen voting. Yea!

I voted last Tuesday! Even then, the line was around the building (I live in Houston). I'm so proud of everyone, no matter what side they're on!

I voted! Hubs and I left work at 10am and went to the polling station. We didn't even have to stand in line! And I'm so proud of hubs - this was his first time voting.

I'm out of town, but I voted absentee last week before I left.

Voted by absentee mail! Hope all is well with you! :)

I am to young to vote so thanks for all of those who did vote who can

i not only voted, i knit a whole doggie sweater and worked at the registrar of voters office in orange county, california.

I brought my knitting, but there was no line, so I didn't knit a stitch while I was there. (I did knit while I watched the returns.)

I voted, but I went at an "off" time so I didn't have a chance to knit one stitch!

I brought a sock with me to the polls, so I could knit while I waited, but there was no line. I was almost disappointed! :-)

I was knitting a sock on dpns while in line to vote early a few weeks ago. "What are you doing with those little sticks?" asked the lady behind me. Cracked me up!

I'm so glad to hear that I was not the only one who expected long lines and brought my knitting along! But like so many of you, I didn't really get a chance to knit - in and out in 20 minutes!

I voted. And yes my candidate won for a change. Yippee!!
