Knit Purl

I have a weakness for wrap sweaters. Not only do they keep me warm when the temperature drops, but they are extremely versatile. After purchasing one or two in stores this past season and ending up less than 100% satisfied, I decided to take matters into my own knitting hands.

Ivy will keep you comfortable and warm in style as the cold weather moves in this fall and winter. Its wrap design means you can adjust for a slightly looser or more snug fit as necessary, and the large bands of ribbing along the hem and cuffs are both stylish and practical.

The ribbing makes use of the twisted rib stitch, which achieves a look very close to falling leaves or vines of ivy -- very appropriate as fall moves into winter. A single repeat of this pattern subtly enhances the neckline and collar.

This sweater can be worn just as easily with jeans and a t-shirt as with a skirt and camisole. The two sashes pass all the way around the body, allowing for even wrapping. Make Ivy in this alpaca/tencel blend from Elann for extra-snuggly warmth, or substitute a lighter wool in the same gauge to take the temperature down a notch.

FINISHING

Block all pieces to measurements given.

Replace held sts of Right Front on needle and work as for Left Front neckband. Sew ends of neckband halves together, and sew to edge of back neckline.

Weave in ends.
Sew sleeves into armholes.
Sew sleeve seams.
Sew left side seam.

Sew top 5 inches and bottom 5 inches of right side seam; do not break yarn. This will leave a large hole, which will be sewn to the right size once tie placement has been determined.

Try on sweater and decide on best placement for ties (level with your waist). Pin ties in place, then sew one to each front edge of sweater.

Try sweater on again and determine best placement for hole in right side seam; mark with pins. (Left tie will pass through this hole when sweater is worn.) Sew hole to correct size.

Weave in remaining ends.
