Using dpns in larger size, CO
64[72, 80, 88] sts. Join, and work ruffle as follows:
Row 1:
*K4, p4* around.
Row 2, 3, 4: Work all sts as they appear.
Row 5: *K4,
p2tog, p2* around -- 56[63, 70, 77] sts.
Row 6, 7, 8: Work all sts as they appear.
Row 9: *K4, p2tog, p1 * around -- 48[54, 60, 66]
sts.
Row 10, 11, 12: Work all sts as they appear.
Row 13: *K4, p2tog * around -- 40[45, 50, 55] sts.
Row 14, 15, 16: Work all sts as they appear.
Row 17: *K3, SSK * around -- 32[36, 40, 44] sts.
K 2 rounds even.
Next round: K2, pm, finish round.
Work inc round, as follows:
K to 1 st before marker, m1, k1, sl marker, k1,
m1, work around.
Work 8[7, 6, 5] rounds even.
Repeat these 9[8, 7, 6] rounds
13[15, 17, 19] times; 58[66, 74, 82] sts.
Work even until sleeves measures
18.5 inches or desired length, from beginning of
St st [row 17 of ruffle]. Ruffle should flare over
base of hand.
Next round, work to 4 sts before
marker, BO 8 sts, finish round even. Place live
sts on scrap yarn.
Make a second identical sleeve.
Body
Using smaller needle, CO 102[118,
134, 150] sts. Do not join.
Establish ribbing as follows:
k1, *p4, k4*, ending with p4, k1.
Knitting the first and last st
of each row to form a selvage, work 3 more rows
of ribbing as established. On the next row, maintaining
the ribs and selvage sts as established, work 16[19,
22, 25] sts, pm, work 70[80, 90, 100] sts, pm, work
remaining 16[19, 22, 25] sts.
Note: the two sets of sts outside
the markers are the front and underarms of the shrug;
these will be in St st. The center 70[80, 90, 100]
sts are the back; these will worked be in the lozenge
pattern.
Change to larger needles. K1,
p100[116, 132, 148], k1.
Establish the lozenge pattern
on the center back sts and St st outside the markers
as follows:
RS:K16[19, 22, 25], sl marker,
work row 1 of lozenge pattern, sl marker, k k16[19,
22, 25].
Continue as established
through 1 complete repeat [16 rows] of the lozenge
pattern, then work 3 more rows, ending with row
3. If a longer back is desired, work additional
16 row reps, ending with row 3.
Armhole shaping
In patt, work to 8 sts before
first marker. BO 8 sts. Purl across to 2nd marker.
BO 8 sts. Work to end of row.
Join sleeves
K 8[11, 14, 17], pm, k sts from
first sleeve, pm, work back sts in patt [row 5 of
lozenge pattern], pm, k sts from second sleeve,
pm, k to end of row -- 186[218, 250, 282] sts on
needle.
Raglan Shaping
Next and all WS rows: K1, p across
to 1 st from end, k1.
At the same time, keeping the
center back sts [between the second and third markers]
in patt, work raglan shaping on RS rows as follows:
*Work to 2 sts before marker,
k2tog, sl marker, SSK, rep across from * [8 sts
decreased each round].
Repeat these 2 rows 5[8, 11, 14]
times more, until only 2 sts remain before the first
marker and after the fourth.
From now on, work these 2 sts
even, continuing other decreases as established
[6 sts decreased each round]. You may want to remove
the first and fourth markers at this point.
Repeat these rows until 36[38,
40, 42] sts remain. Leave these sts on the needle.
Using smaller needle, pick up
48[51, 54, 57] sts up left front, work 36[38, 40,
42] live sts in patt, pick up 48[51, 54, 57] sts
down right front --132[140, 148, 156] sts total.
Beginning on WS, work 4 rows in p4,k4 rib.
BO in pattern.
