And such is the inspiration for this neck-warming
alternative to a scarf under winter coats or as a fashion accessory for
sweaters.

Note: Yarn can be substituted with any aran weight wool yarn
with a recommended gauge of
18 sts=4 inches listed on the ball band.

Recommended needle size:

set US #6/4mm straight or circular needle

Gauge:
22 sts/28 rows = 4 inches in stockinette st
Note: Yarn is worked more tightly than recommended gauge to
produce a firm fabric. |

 CO 112 stitches.
Row 1 [RS]: Sl 1 knitwise, k3, p2, [k4, p2] to last 4 sts, k4.
Row 2 [WS]: Sl 1 purlwise, p3, k2, [p4, k2] to last 4 sts, p4.
Row 3 [RS]: Sl 1 knitwise, k3, p2, [C4B, p2, k4, p2] to last 10 sts, C4B, p2, k4.
Row 4 [WS]: Work as for Row 2.
Repeat these 4 rows until work measures approx. 3.75 inches, ending with Row 4.
From this point, work in 4x2 Rib as set (Rows
1 and 2 only); no further
cable twists will be worked.
Shape Upper Edge:
Note: In the next series of rows, sts will be bound off at the beginning of RS rows. The last st of each WS row will be left unworked, and will be the first st in the row that follows; this will help give a smooth shape to the BO edge.
Row 1 [RS]: BO 12 sts, work in pattern to end. 100 sts.
Even-Numbered Rows 2-14 [WS]: Work in pattern to last st; turn work without working last st.
Rows 3 and 5 [RS]: Work as for Row 1. 76 sts when Row 5 is complete.
Odd-Numbered Rows 7-11 [RS]: BO 18 sts, work in pattern to end. 22 sts when Row 11 is complete.
Row 13 [RS]: BO 12 sts, work in pattern to end.
Row 15 [RS]: BO remaining 10 sts.
 Buttonhole Band:
With RS facing, pick up and k 15 sts along shortest edge of work.
Rows 1-6: K all sts.
Row 7 [WS]: K6, BO 3 sts, k to end.
Row 8 [RS]: K6, CO 3 sts, k to end. 15 sts.
Rows 9-11: K all sts.
Row 12 [RS]: K11, [k2tog] twice. 13 sts.
Row 13 [WS]: K all sts.
Row 14 [RS]: K9, [k2tog] twice.
BO remaining 11 sts. | |
