INTRODUCTION

Masten

beauty shot

Piquant

I love naming patterns after places I love, and Masten is no exception. This cardigan is named after the remnants of a ghost town tucked into the Endless Mountains of Pennsylvania. Today, Masten is the trailhead for a circuit backpacking loop.

Although I've spent countless hours in that forest, this place is particularly special because I chose the trail for my first solo backpacking trip. What remains of this town is the trail: Old Logger's Path, and the stone chimney of a building destroyed long ago: an echo of the history of the lumber industry in that region.

Masten features panels of traveling cables that remind me of old images of timber booms, in which logs were transported to sawmills via rivers. Eyelet panels give the fabric more fluidity, providing balance to the structured panels of cables.

PATTERN NOTES

[Knitty's list of standard abbreviations and techniques can be found here.]

Masten is worked from the bottom up. The body is worked flat in one piece. The right and left fronts are separated from the back at the armholes. Sleeve stitches are picked up and worked top-down in the round. Afterthought pockets are added during finishing and include the slightest pop of color that peeks through the eyelet columns. Stitches along the front opening are picked up and knit for the button band, and short-rows are used to create the shawl-collar. When working charts, always take care to ensure you are working from the correct chart for your size.

Sloped Bind-Off:
On the row before the bind-off row, slip the last st purlwise with yarn held in front. On the bind-off row, slip the first 2 sts purlwise with yarn held in back, pass the first slipped st over the second slipped st, bind off remaining stitches as usual.

Pockets
Note: The magic loop method is recommended for working the pockets in the round. You may wish to use dpns instead, just note that it may feel awkward for the first few rounds.

Place 24 sts above and below the waste yarn sts onto larger needles. 48 sts total. Carefully remove waste yarn. Join CC. Distribute sts evenly among needles.

Set up Rnd: Knit to end, pm to denote beg of rnd.
Rnd 1: Knit.

Place first 24 sts on one needle and last 24 sts on separate needle. Holding the needles parallel to one another, graft the 2 sets of sts together using the Kitchener method.

Pocket Edge
With smaller needle and MC, pick up and knit 24[26, 24, 26, 24, 26, 24, 26] sts evenly along lower edge of pocket opening, taking care to ensure you are picking up stitches worked in MC to avoid a line of CC across the front of the work.
