Deathly Hallows, a free knitting pattern from Knitty.com. Free knitting pattern for a colorwork yoke pullover inspired by the Harry Potter novels (but with a caveat about JK Rowling's transphobic actions and how the designer and this publication rejects her beliefs completely).

INTRODUCTION

Deathly Hallows

beauty shotby

Tangy

Deathly Hallows is inspired by the magical symbol from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The symbol of the Deathly Hallows represents the three magical gifts given to the Peverell brothers by Death: the Elder Wand, the Resurrection Stone, and the Cloak of Invisibility.

Using two deliciously soft and durable yarns from Hudson + West Co. – Forge and Weld – this pullover is a cozy oversized, top-down pullover, featuring lowered armholes, short-row shaping, and stranded colorwork on the circular yoke. The marled yoke background is achieved by holding Weld, a fingering weight yarn, doubled in contrasting colors for a more magical appearance.

A note from the author: In light of J.K. Rowling's recent transphobic comments and actions, as a person profoundly shaped by the Harry Potter series and an ally to LBGTQ+ people, her words deeply hurt me as much as they have hurt many trans people who found a home, acceptance, and felt (maybe for the first time) the power of unconditional love in Harry's world. Her words are in direct opposition to the core message of her books, and I hope that one day she is able to recognize the lessons in her own writing.

As for me, I'll be waiting for her with forgiveness and a hope for healing the wound in her heart that caused such vitriolic hate speech. Harry Potter belongs to us now and no one can steal its light from us—not even the author.

PATTERN NOTES

[Knitty's list of standard abbreviations and techniques can be found here.]

The sweater is worked top-down in the round. The neckband ribbing is picked up and knit from the CO edge to create a stabilizing seam. The colorwork uses two contrasting colors of fingering weight held doubled to create the marl effect, and a highly contrasting solid color in worsted weight (CC2 and CC3 held doubled = worsted weight). Sleeve stitches are held using waste yarn and then knit from the top-down in the round. Short rows are worked using the German Short Row method. Tubular bind off is used on the sample's neckband, hem, and cuffs in finishing, but you can substitute your preferred stretchy bind off if desired.
