INTRODUCTION

Scrivadelly

The word "scrivadelly" appears in a picture book called Du Iz Tak?, which is written entirely in a made-up language. Scrivadelly seems to mean beautiful, and I find this cowl very beautiful. Like the story, it's organic and kind of earthy and swoops around back to the start. Like the made-up language, it's evocative and somehow makes sense despite itself.

Construction starts at the front, with a leaf pattern widening out before partly transitioning to plain brioche ribbing. Irregularly placed increases and decreases keep the pattern angling left as it gradually narrows, travelling around the back of the neck and finally being seamed to the top of the starting tail. The finished item sits snug against your neck and chest but spreads over the shoulders; it can be worn under a coat as a dickie, spread out elegantly or bunched up for a more casual cowl.

I've combined two irresistible, glowing yarns in this: a hand-dyed merino single, and a fine mohair/silk lace-weight, which not only adds halo and warmth but also keeps that twisty singles behaving nicely (singles are not ideal for brioche). It must be said that working brioche in double-stranded yarn is a pain. You could make your life easier by choosing a single yarn instead, about a worsted weight. But this way is really so scrivadelly.

PATTERN NOTES

[Knitty's list of standard abbreviations and techniques can be found here.]

When instructed to cast on at the end of a row, you can either use backwards loop cast-on or turn the work and work a cable cast-on.

Stitch marker naming
When following the text instructions, some markers are named (i.e. Rib increase marker, Rib decrease marker, Motif marker) and some given generic identifiers (i.e. increase/decrease markers). The generic markers are just there to indicate where shaping stitches should be worked; the named markers define pattern areas, and correlate with markers shown on the charts. It may be helpful to use a different color for each kind of marker.
Note:
not every marker is mentioned in every row; always slip markers as they occur until you get to the next specific instruction.

Return to start: Slip sts back to the start of the needle so you can work across again with the second yarn.

Special abbreviations
sl: Slip 1 stitch purlwise with yarn at WS.
k5-in-1: (k1, yo, k1, yo, k1) into the same stitch. 4 sts increased.

DIRECTIONS

Using BC, CO 3 sts.
Note: BC and FC always refer to the two recommended yarns held together.

Work Starting Tail Pattern:
Work Rows BC 1–FC 30 once.

Work Body Pattern 1 Setup:
Work Rows BC 1–FC 20 once.

Work Body Pattern 1:
Work Rows BC 1–FC 10 four times in total. After each repeat of Body Pattern 1, there will be 4 stitches fewer before the Rib increase marker, 2 more between that and the Motif marker, and 2 fewer stitches in total. After the final repeat, there are only 7 stitches before the Rib increase marker, 10 between that and the Motif marker, 48 sts to end of row – 65 sts in total. Remove Rib marker.

Work Body Pattern 2 Setup:
Work Rows BC 1–FC 10 once.

Work Body Pattern 2:
Work Rows BC 1–FC 10 twice. After the second repeat, there are 6 sts between the Rib increase and Motif markers, and 63 stitches altogether on the needle.

Work Ending Tail Pattern:
Work BC 1–FC 10. Work Rows BC 11–FC 12 7 times total, then work Rows BC 25–FC 35.

Cut FC. Cast off purlwise with BC. Cut BC, leaving a tail around four times the width of your cast-off edge for seaming.

FINISHING

With WS facing, pin cast-off edge and side of Ending tail to top of Starting tail. Start by matching up the two removable stitch markers (marking the end of the Starting tail and the start of the Ending tail). Pin the final end of the piece (end of cast-off) to a point about 10in/25cm along the top of the Body pattern 1 section, so that the two sections lie flat and perpendicular, and seam.

Weave in ends. Soak the cowl in cool water for at least 15 minutes, then press between towels to squeeze out water. Lay flat to dry, with the narrower back section on top, so that you can get the best view of all the leaves and settle each one carefully into shape. If possible, readjust the position after a few hours so that the leaves on either side also get a chance to lie flat.
