INTRODUCTION

Third Coast

beauty shot

by

Tangy

Nicknamed America's Third Coast, Michigan has more miles of freshwater shoreline than any other state in the US. With water in nearly every direction, you're never far from time well spent at the water. Third Coast is inspired by East Coast sensibilities with a Midwest spin - perfect for a breezy stroll down one of the many rocky or sandy beaches at sunset.

Knit seamlessly from the top down in a hardy yarn, with a relaxed fit and a split hem, this pullover is easy to throw on when the wind picks up across the water. The traditional nautical stripes are broken up with the simplest 1x1 color rows that blend together like waves mingling with rocks on the beach.

MATERIALS

Yarn
Cascade 220 [100% wool; 220yd/200m per 100g skein];

spacer [MC] Navy; 4[4, 4, 5, 5, 6, 6, 7, 7] skeins
spacer [CC] White; 2[2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3] skeins

Yarn Characteristics
spacer The sample shown uses a worsted weight, non-superwash wool. To substitute, I recommend a wool or acrylic yarn or blend with similar drape. The non-superwash wool holds its shape during wear; if substituting a superwash wool, it may have more drape and/or stretch with wear more than shown in the sample.

PATTERN NOTES

[Knitty's list of standard abbreviations and techniques can be found here.]

Construction method: This pullover is worked in one piece from the top down. The collar is cast on provisionally, worked in ribbing and folded, knitting together with the cast on edge to create a double folded collar. The yoke is worked top down, side to side, then separated for the body and sleeves, which are all worked in the round. Stripes include simple colorwork on the sleeves and torso. The bottom hem is split with the front and back worked separately, and with the back longer than the front.

Techniques: Stranded color knitting in the round, provisional cast on, knit, purl, M1L, M1R, k2tog, ribbing, bind off.

M1PR — Right Leaning Purl Increase: With left needle tip, pick up running thread from back to front, purl through the front loop.
M1PL — Left Leaning Purl Increase: With left needle tip, pick up running thread from front to back, purl through the back loop.

Changing colors: I prefer to carry along both colors as I go to reduce the number of ends to weave in. Use your preferred method for changing colors.
