Sweetie Jar

Bluebell yarns is run by talented indie dyer Becca, who makes some really lovely vibrant plain and variegated non-superwash, synthetic-free hand dyed yarns in small batches. Becca has found a new base for her chunky yarn so was selling the old base at a substantial discount, so of course I had to buy enough to knit a jacket. There was only a skein or two of any colorway, so I got a whole lot of different skeins in mixtures of blue and purple, sorted them in a kind of order, picked one color to go round the edges and knitted this jacket in alternating stripes of plain and variegated yarn. The finished cardigan looks like a jar of sweeties!

Although this particular yarn is discontinued, the yarn that has replaced it is very similar, but less scratchy, as it is Bluefaced Leicester instead of Texel. You can find Bluebell yarns here. If you want to try dyeing your own, you can find a very similar yarn base here.

I then wanted to try a monochrome version, because perhaps I need a little sophistication in my life, but there was nothing in my sizeable but colorful stash in sufficient quantity, so I sent off for Cascade Yarns Ecological Wool – also described as a chunky yarn, but very different. I made this garment longer, adding 5 inches/13cm to the body length below the armholes.

The colored jacket has plain black buttons. The buttons on the monochrome jacket are individually hand made by McAnaraks in Scotland and are washable.

This jacket is designed to fit loosely so that it can be worn over a thinner sweater as an extra layer. The textured stripe pattern is made by alternating stripes of main color and contrast color. The texture results from the use of tuck stitches on a base of garter stitch. A little saddle at the top of the raglan shaping gives a neat fit over the shoulders.

My jacket is made with buttons, but I think it would look equally good with a zip, or hooks and eyes to make an invisible fastening.

Yarn Characteristics
spacer The multicolored sample is made from Bluebell Yarns Texel Chunky. This is a hand-dyed three-ply worsted spun yarn with a smooth surface.

The monochrome sample is made from Cascade Yarns Ecological Wool. This is a two-ply yarn with a light airy spin.

Chunky yarn is very variable. Both these yarns are described as Chunky/Bulky with 7wpi, but they are very different. To achieve gauge in the Texel, I used a US 10/6mm needle and this made a firm fabric. For the same gauge in the Ecological Wool I used a US 10.75/7mm needle, and this made a more open, softer fabric and a lighter garment. I like both of them, but they are very different.

To substitute for either of these yarns, look for something fairly smooth-surfaced. A bit of fluffiness is acceptable, but avoid very textured or hairy yarns. Acrylic would be fine, but avoid cotton as it will make a very heavy garment. You could also use two strands of DK held together. But because of the variability of chunky yarns on the market, please swatch, and make sure that you are happy with the resulting fabric before casting on your garment.

PATTERN NOTES

[Knitty's list of standard abbreviations and techniques can be found here.]

Construction method: The sleeves are worked in the round starting at the cuff. The body is worked back and forth starting at the hem. The body and sleeves are joined and the yoke is worked back and forth with raglan decreases. A small saddle is formed using short rows and then the collar is worked. The piece is finished with an icord edging all the way round, in which buttonholes are incorporated.

The pattern on the second sleeve is a mirror image of the first, so that your garment will be symmetrical. In all other respects, the sleeves are identical. It doesn’t matter which one is the right sleeve and which is the left.

Techniques:

  • Garter Stitch (worked in the round):
    Rnd 1: Knit.
    Rnd 2: Purl.
    Rep Rnd 1-2 for patt.
  • Garter stitch (worked flat):
    Row 1: Knit.
    Rep this row for patt.
  • Textured Stripe Pattern (multiple of 2 sts + 7)
    Row 1 [RS]: Using CC, k3, k1b, (k1, k1b) to last 3 sts, k3.
Row 2 [WS]: Using CC, knit.
    Row 3: Using MC, k4, (k1b, k1) to last 3 sts, k3.
    Row 4: Using MC, knit.
    Repeat Row 1-4 for patt.
  • K1b: Knit 1 into the row below, making the stitch through two loops. A tutorial can be found here.
  • Yarn handling: When working colored stripes, carry yarn not in use up side of work on the wrong side
  • Grafting (photo tutorial | video tutorial)

Break CC and continue with MC only.

Shape saddles and work neckband:
Note: Saddle shaping is worked with ssk decreases on the RS and k2tog decreases on the WS. When working the ssk, in order to maintain the continuity of the textured stripe pattern, some stitches will need to be worked with the stitch below meaning that there will be three loops on the needle. This will be evident when working the pattern.

Row 1 [RS]: K1, patt to 2 sts before m, k2, remove m (right front raglan m), k2, patt 2 sts, k1, sl next st, remove m, sl the st back to the LH needle, ssk, turn. 1 st decreased at right back.
Row 2 [WS]: K5, k2tog, turn. 1 st decreased at right front.
Row 3: K5, ssk, turn. 1 st decreased at right back.
Row 4: K5, k2tog, turn. 1 st decreased at right front.
Rep Rows 3-4 4[5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12] times more; no Right Front sts rem. 43[47, 49, 51, 55, 57, 59, 63, 65] sts.

Row 5 [RS]: K5, sl next st, then using LH needle pick up loop before next st from front to back, sl the st from RH needle back to LH needle and k it together with the picked-up loop tbl (this closes the gap made by the short rows), patt to 2 sts before next m, k2, remove m (left back raglan m), k2, patt 2 sts, k1, sl next st, remove m (left front raglan m), sl the st back to the LH needle, ssk, turn. 1 st decreased at left front.
Row 6: K5, k2tog, turn. 1 st decreased at left back.
Row 7: K5, ssk, turn. 1 st decreased at left front.
Rep Rows 6-7 4[5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12] times more; no Left Front sts rem. 32[34, 34, 34, 36, 36, 36, 38, 38] sts.

Row 8 [WS]: K5, k2tog, turn. 1 st decreased at left back. 31[33, 33, 33, 35, 35, 35, 37, 37] sts.
Row 9: K to end of row.
Row 10: K5, sl next st, then using LH needle pick up loop before next st from front to back, sl the st from RH needle back to LH needle and k it together with the picked-up loop tbl (this closes the gap made by the short rows), k to end of row. Break yarn. Leave rem 31[33, 33, 33, 35, 35, 35, 37, 37] sts on needle.

FINISHING

Neckband
With RS facing and using MC, knit across 3[4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5] held right front neck sts, pick up and knit 9[9, 9, 9, 9, 9, 9, 10, 10] sts up right front neck, k 31[33, 33, 33, 35, 35, 35, 37, 37] sts across rem yoke sts, pick up and knit 9[9, 9, 9, 9, 9, 9, 10, 10] sts down left front neck, knit 3[4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5] held left front neck sts. 55[59, 59 59, 63, 63, 63, 67, 67, ] sts.

Knit 5 rows, ending with a WS row. Do not break yarn.

Work i-cord edging and buttonholes:
Lay your work out on a flat surface and mark position of 6 buttons (or your preferred number) on the left front garter border. If you are not planning to use buttons, consider making the buttonholes anyway, because they are practically invisible and this allows you to change your mind later.

Starting at the right front and using MC, k across 55[59, 59, 59, 63, 63, 63, 67, 67] sts from neckband, pm, pick up and knit one st from each garter st ridge down left front, pm, pick up and knit one st from each cast-on st at lower edge of garment, pm, pick up and knit one st from each garter st ridge up right front. The exact number of sts is not critical and will depend on your row gauge. You may need to use more than one circular needle to fit all the stitches.

With RS facing, cast on 2 sts to beg of round using knitted cast-on method.

K1, k2togtbl, *(slip 2 sts back to LH needle, k1, k2togtbl) to next m, slip 2 sts back to LH needle, k2, remove m; rep from * twice more. You have ended at the bottom of the right front.

Note: Check your button size against the i-cord bind-off to see how long you need to make your buttonholes. The buttons on the multicolored sample garment are 28mm in diameter and are about the same size as 3 rows of i-cord. Your buttonhole should be the same size or slightly smaller than your button so round the number of rows down if it isn’t a whole number. If you haven’t chosen any buttons, I suggest making a 3-row buttonhole.

Note: Your buttonholes need to have one stitch above the button placement and the rest below, so that the front hangs correctly. You will need at least two stitches above the top buttonhole at the neck and two stitches below the bottom buttonhole at the hem. Readjust your button placement if necessary, and mark where the buttonholes are to start.

Cont i-cord bind-off as set until you have worked to the first buttonhole marker.

To work buttonhole: Leaving the 2 sts of your i-cord on the RH needle, sl the next 2 sts purlwise. Pass the first slipped st over the 2nd (binding off 1 st). Sl the next st, and pass the first st over the 2nd as before, binding off 1 st. Cont until you have bound off the number of sts needed for your buttonhole. Sl the 3 sts on the RH needle back to the LH needle. (K2, sl 2 sts from RH needle to LH needle) until you have worked the number of i-cord rows needed for your buttonhole (see note above).
**K1, k2togtbl, (sl 2 sts from RH needle to LH needle, k1, k2togtbl) until you reach the point for your next buttonhole. Rep from ** until all buttonholes have been worked.
(Slip 2 sts back to LH needle, k1, k2togtbl) until no sts rem on LH needle.

Break yarn, pass end of yarn through rem 2 sts to fasten off, and sew the ends of the i-cord together as neatly as you can.

Work i-cord on sleeves:
Using MC and with RS facing, pick up and knit 1 st for each cast-on st at sleeve cuff. With RS facing, cast on 2 sts to beg of round using knitted cast-on method. K1, k2togtbl, (slip 2 sts back to LH needle, k1, k2togtbl) until 2 sts rem on RH needle. Break yarn and draw through rem 2 sts. Sew ends of i-cord together as for neckband.

Repeat for second sleeve.

Graft underarms, using the long tail of yarn left from working sleeve. Weave in all ends on inside of work. Soak garment in warm water with a drop of washing up liquid or woolly wash for 20-30 minutes. Short spin or roll in towels to remove excess water, pull gently into shape and allow to dry flat. Do not pin or stretch. Sew on buttons.
