I like lace shawls. I like twisted stitches. This design is a fusion of those two ideas – sinuous small cables provide movement and structure, while simple knitted lace panels within the baubles provide loft and airiness.

The beads at the end of the outer motifs add always- needed sparkle, making Bauble a fabulous statement to sling over one’s shoulders.

Although Bauble is not a difficult knit, it does require plenty of attention. The knitted lace is charted and worked on both right side and wrong side rows, making careful reading and knitting essential to the success of this project.

Construction: This shawl is knit from the top down with yarn overs on the edges and around a center ktbl stitch. A border of 3 garter stitches is used.

Beads: Beads are used to add a bit of decoration to the shawl and may be omitted if desired. This article provides information on how to add beads using a crochet hook, the method used in this design.

It is recommended that after inserting the bead onto the stitch, the stitch is then purled. This allows for greater visibility of the bead on the right side of the garment.

C1R p: place next st on cable needle and hold behind work, k1 tbl, p1 from cable needle
C1L p: place next st on cable needle and hold in front of work, p1, k1 tbl from cable needle
C1R tbl: place next st on cable needle and hold behind work, k1 tbl, k1 tbl from cable needle
P tbl: purl stitch through back of loop.

DIRECTIONS

Work 10 rows in garter stitch (knit every row).
Next row [WS]: K3, turn work 90 degrees, pick up and knit 5 stitches along garter ridges, turn work 90 degrees, pick up and knit 3 stitches from CO edge. 11 sts.

Note: Odd numbered rows of foundation chart are worked on the RS from right to left, even numbered rows are worked on the WS from left to right.

FINISHING
Weave in all ends. Soak completed shawl in lukewarm water, then block shawl to specified dimensions using pins and blocking wires or strong smooth yarn. Leave shawl pinned until completely dry.
