Contemplating all the high-low skirts I see in stores, I started thinking about how to make a high-low cardi. The most interesting idea I had was to use increases and decreases to curve the body, but I knew that would make the neckline very low in the back and much too high in the front. As I mulled over the problem, I began to wonder if I could knit the front borders up and graft them to fill in the low back neck. Would it work? From the front, this cardigan is short with a wide v-neck. From the back it seems to be long with an interesting overlap on the yoke. The only thing the same from front to back is the deep color and texture. It might take more than two looks to figure out how it works! |

PATTERN NOTES |
The buttons being small enough to easily fit through the knit fabric, I decided to not make buttonholes. Also, so I could remove the buttons easily for washing, I sewed the buttons onto a strip of ribbon rather than onto the sweater itself. When I want the buttons off, I simply unbutton them. The yoke seems shallow when it is first knit, but the overlapping strips will make the yoke about 3 inches deeper once they are grafted on. If you want to adjust the fit, bear in mind that the bust line in the front will be about 4 inches below the top of the body section. The bust line in the center back will be about 4 inches into the yoke. The waistline in the front will be about 1 inch above the cast on edge, and the waistline in the center back will be about 9 inches into the body. This makes custom shaping complicated, but entirely possible with careful attention and calculations. Worn on a woman with a full bust, the sweater is about 8 inches skewed front to back, but laid out flat it is 6 inches. If you have a flat bust, expect the front to be about 6.5 inches shorter than the back. If you have a very full bust, it may be 10 inches difference. Rastita is a single ply yarn that blooms very fully, filling in what would be a loose gauge for the yarn weight. This makes for a particularly soft and cushy fabric. But in a typical plied yarn, sport weight at 20 stitches to 4 inches may look too loose. You may want to use a yarn that is a heavier weight instead. Look for yarn with a ball band indicating it should be worked up at 20 stitches to 4 inches. |
