Knitty: little purls of wisdom

Tangy

I have to admit, this stereo-echo concept is a bit silly. The construction of the shawl stays the same throughout the shawl, only the number of stitches change. Though it is a modular design, you never have to break the main yarn. You just continue working it and at some point you'll just run out of stitches to knit. The idea was planted while knitting socks. Instead of working both at the same time I knitted them separately. On the question why not knitting this in stereo, I played with the concept of stereo. One thing led to the next and the concept of stereo-echo was born. This had to be made into a shawl. So the number of stitches subsides, while the number of shawl-tabs doubles. Turning this nerdy concept into a nice visual play.

This nerdy shawl combines two weights of yarn, creating a dramatic drape. Being knit in two directions makes the shawl much fun to knit. It is less complex than it looks. The shawl starts out with 21 stitches which rapidly increases. Throughout the shawl you never break the main color, so there isn't much to weave in at the end.

The shawl consist of longway strips and sideway tabs. The construction is quite straightforward, but do keep track of you stitches and directions.

If you are as much a material-freak, number-crazy and nerd as I am, then you will love to knit this one.

PATTERN NOTES
[Knitty's list of standard abbreviations and techniques can be found here.]

This shawl is worked in tiers, consisting of one longways and one sideways strip. Each strip is numbered, for ease of navigation through the pattern. The sideways strips are joined to the longways strip with decreases.

Cable cast on: a tutorial can be found here.

Sl 1: Slip the first stitch purlwise with yarn held in front.
The short rows are worked without wraps; because the shawl is worked in garter stitch, they aren’t needed.

While knitting the sideways part of the shawl, loops are formed to knit the longways strips, to save you having to pick up stitches. This is done by making a yarnover at the beginning of the needle. Note that these yarnover loops are not worked when working the sideways section.

MC is used throughout; the stripes are worked with both strands held together. Join and break CC as you need it

To make a bigger or smaller shawl, start with a different number of stitches. For a smaller shawl start with 18 stitches; for a bigger one 24. Don't do more than 24 stitches, or the last tier will be a never-ending chore.

YO-BO: Using MC, YO, BO until one stitch remains before the marker, remove the marker and work an ssk on the last MC and first CC stitch after the marker, and lift the previous st over the SSK to bind off one more. Pick up left leg of the last worked CC stitch and put it on the left needle. Slip the last worked st back onto the left needle.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER

designernamespacer Leslie Eisinger is a fashion designer from Delft, the Netherlands. After graduating art academy in 2010, she started knitting by hand. This is her second language; she can construct any shape by knitting. She started at TUDelft to become an engineer, but her hands had to work and make what the mind thought up. Knitting, it turned out, was the way to express and make shapes, bananas and garments. Most of her work is quite daring and complex. Knitting gave her a way to construct 3D structures.
