I have a friend who is amazingly elegant. In fact, she would look elegant wearing a sack. Not only that, she is a genuinely lovely person, a talented viola player, and a keen learner knitter. I was inspired to design this garment by a jumper she was wearing which featured twisted stitches. The similarity ended there, but I thought that maybe I could design a pullover that would make me look elegant as well. The jury is out on whether I succeeded, but I do like the jumper I made.
The twisted stitches appear in saddles at the shoulders, down each side of front and back, and on the forearms. The shoulder and armhole shaping is a blend of saddle and raglan making a nice fit. The twisted stitches are also reflected in twisted rib at hems and neckline. The long sleeves have a little gather at the top and are full with fitted cuffs. I made a V neck because it works with a pretty blouse, and to complement the "v" effect of the twisted stitch panels. Now I just need the pretty blouse.
As I was making the long sleeved pullover, it occurred to me that a short sleeved version in cotton or linen might be rather nice for summer (usually in our part of the world that's maybe a day or two in July or August), so back I went to my LYS and found some lovely drapey cotton/linen blend yarn. I've not used cotton or linen much in the past so this was a nice adventure for me.

MATERIALS
Yarn
Green short-sleeved version (shown above)
King Cole Linendale Reflections DK, 57% cotton, 30% viscose, 13% linen, 131 yds/120 m per 50g skein, colorway 5641 Ingleton, 6[7, 8, 9, 9, 10, 11, 13, 14] skeins.
Pink long-sleeved version (shown below)
West Yorkshire Spinners Fleece DK, 100% Blueface Leicester wool, 246 yds/225 m per 100g skein, colorway 1111 Foxglove, 4[5, 5, 6, 7, 7, 8, 9, 9] skeins.
Yarn Characteristics
The King Cole (green) yarn is a multiple plied DK weight, with very little stretch and lots of drape. For yarn substitutions, pick a yarn with a round profile and solid or lightly variegated color, to show off the twisted stitches at their best.
The West Yorkshire Spinners (pink) yarn is a 4-ply, worsted spun DK weight, with some lustre and drape and plenty of bounce.

Note: gauge is always taken after blocking.
PATTERN NOTES
[Knitty's list of standard abbreviations and techniques can be found here.]
Construction method: This pullover is worked seamlessly from the top down. Two saddle pieces are worked first, then stitches are cast on and picked up from the saddles to form the yoke, which is knitted flat initially, with increases at neck, sleeves and body. The yoke is then joined to form a V neck and continued in the round. Body and sleeves are separated and worked downwards to the hem. Sleeves are then knitted downwards. All pattern and shaping stitches are worked on the RS when working flat.
The set-up row and the first few rows of the yoke will be a little awkward as there are sharp corners to negotiate as you work around the saddles. This will get easier after a few rows. Pull out loops of your needle's cable to turn the corners. Using a long cable and short tips will be helpful here, if available.
Techniques:
- Cable cast-on video and photo tutorial.
- RT - right twist; knit next 2 stitches together, do not slip off left hand needle, knit the first stitch again, and then slip both stitches off left hand needle.
- LT – left twist; change orientation of next two stitches by slipping them knitwise one at a time, then slip back onto the left needle. Knit the second stitch through the back loop, do not slip off needle, knit both stitches together through the back loop, and then slip both stitches off left hand needle.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER
Kate has been a knitter and lover of anything woolly since childhood. She survived more than 40 years working in healthcare by playing viola, walking outdoors and knitting, hopefully not all at the same time. Since retirement in 2022, Kate has had a lot of fun trying vainly to reduce her stash, designing knitwear and playing with natural dyes in her garden shed. As well as a roomful of fiber and yarn, she has three grown-up children, a husband and a cat, and a growing number of grandchildren and granddogs. She lives in North Yorkshire close to the moors and the sea.
