Knitty: little purls of wisdom
Title
beauty shot
Tangy

I wanted a light tee that would be simple, loose fitting and comfortable, but at the same time feminine, with interesting detail and flattering on most body shapes.

Stiorra is worked seamlessly from the top down. First, two shoulder lace bands are worked, then stitches for back and front are picked up along the edges. Back and front are worked separately to the bottom of armholes, where they are joined, and the remaining part of the body is worked in the round with shaping at the sides, and short rows lengthening the back.

Sleeve stitches are picked up from the sides of armholes, and after a small section of short row shaping at the top, they are worked in the round, with the lace pattern from the shoulders continuing in the center of each sleeve.

The neck is finished with horizontal rib, made by alternating rounds of stockinette stitch with rounds of flexible bind-off.

Picking up sts
To pick up sts along the sides of the shoulder lace bands or sides of the armholes, always pick up stitches in the space between the edge st and the next st – 1 edge st 'disappears' under the newly picked up sts and can only be seen from WS.

K3tog: knit 3 stitches together. If you find this difficult, knit 1 stitch, slip it back to the left needle and with the tip of your right needle, pass the next 2 stitches from the left needle over the knit stitch, then slip the new stitch to the right needle. 2 stitches decreased.

Sssk: slip the next 3 stitches, one by one, knitwise; insert the tip of the left needle from left to right into the fronts of those 3 stitches and knit them together. If you find this difficult, slip the next 2 stitches one by one, knitwise, knit 1 stitch, and with the tip of your left needle, pass those 2 slipped stitches over the knit stitch. 2 sts decreased.

Backward loop CO:
Instructions here. Stitches cast on this way might be loose, so work the CO tightly.

Sleeve lace pattern:
Note: The pattern is worked back and forth while you work shoulder lace bands and top of sleeve short rows. After you have completed short rows, it is worked in the round.

UPPER BACK
Shoulder sts of the back are picked up along the edges of the two shoulder lace bands where you have placed removable markers, center back sts are cast on between the lace bands. Short rows are used to shape shoulders.

Pick up shoulder sts and CO neck sts for back:
Place the two lace bands with RS facing and cast-on ends next to each other, with the ends with scrap yarn to the outside, and the removable markers on both bands at the top.
With larger circular needle and yarn attached to right front, and RS facing,
• pick up and knit 45[45, 45, 61, 61, 61, 61, 76, 76, 76] sts along the longest side of left shoulder lace band marked with removable marker (approx 3 sts to every 4 rows of shoulder lace band for sizes 8-L, and approx 5 sts to every 7 rows for sizes 1X-3X), remove marker as you come to it,
• using the backward loop method, CO 19[23, 25, 29, 29, 31, 33, 33, 37, 37] neck sts,
• pick up and knit 45[45, 45, 61, 61, 61, 61, 76, 76, 76] sts along the longest side of right shoulder lace band marked with removable marker, remove marker as you come to it. 109[113, 115, 151, 151, 153, 155, 185, 189, 189] sts.

Next row (WS): Purl.

Work short rows to shape shoulders, and start working back lace pattern:
Note: The number of sts between the lace markers varies, depending on the row of the lace pattern.

Short row 1 (RS): K76[78, 80, 98, 98, 99, 101, 115, 117, 117], w&t.

Sizes 8, 12, S, M only:
Repeat Dec Row and one even row in pattern. 28[-, 30, -, 47, 47, -, -, -, -] sts on each side of the lace pattern.

All sizes:
Next row (RS, last armhole row): Work even in pattern.

There are 28[30, 30, 48, 47, 47, 47, 60, 62, 61] back sts each side of the lace pattern and 27[29, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 53, 53, 57] armhole rows, counted from shoulder lace band along the edge of armhole (so you do not count short rows), incl pick-up row.

Take a note of the last row worked for the back lace pattern so you know where to continue later. Place all sts on a spare circular needle, ensuring the lace pattern markers remain in place, and break the yarn. Turn work upside down, so the lace bands are at the top, and work upper front.

UPPER FRONT
Left front shoulder:

Front shoulder sts are picked up from the shoulder lace bands, opposite the back. The left and right shoulders are initially worked separately until the neck shaping is completed. At the same time, shoulders are shaped with short rows, as for the back.

Note: Use the backward loop method for the neck CO sts. You may replace any CO 1 with kfb on RS rows, and pfb on WS rows, if you prefer this method of increasing 1 st.

With straight needles and RS facing, starting from the neck end of left shoulder lace band, pick up and knit 39[39, 39, 55, 55, 55, 55, 70, 70, 70] sts (approx 3 sts to every 4 rows of shoulder lace band for sizes 8-L, and approx 5 sts to every 7 rows for sizes 1X-2X).

Next row (WS): Purl to end.

Work left front short rows:
Short row 1: K5[5, 5, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4], w&t.

FINISHING
Work neckband:
Note: Sts for the neckband are picked up along the neckline, and then all sts are bound off using a flexible method which creates a decorative horizontal line of Vs. The bound off edge is very stretchy and each st has an extra loop at the back which will be used to pick up all the sts again. After all the neck sts are picked up for the second time, 1 rnd of stockinette st with decreases is worked. The whole process (bind off, pick up, 1 rnd in stockinette st with decreases) is repeated once more, then all sts are bound off.

Make sure the bind off rnds in the neckband are worked tightly (Rnd 2). When the stitches are picked up on subsequent rnds (Rnd 3), make sure they are picked up by inserting the needle under the loops behind the row of Vs created on Rnd 2.

Rnd 1 (RS, pick-up rnd): With short smaller circular needle and RS facing, starting from back of left shoulder lace band, pick up and knit
• 21 sts along left shoulder lace band (1 st for every CO st),
• 41[47, 47, 55, 55, 61, 63, 69, 71, 71] sts along front neck,
• 21 sts along right shoulder lace band (1 st for every CO st),
• 19[23, 25, 29, 29, 31, 33, 33, 37, 37] back neck sts (1 st for every CO st). 102[112, 114, 126, 126, 134, 138, 144, 150, 150] sts.

Rnd 2 (BO rnd): Place removable marker into the first st on left needle. Yo, p1 (without removing marker), pass the yo over the last worked st. *Yo, p1, pass 2 sts from right needle over the last worked st; repeat until you run out of sts. After the BO, there will be 1 st left on right needle. Yo, pick up and knit 1 st, by inserting the right needle into the st with the marker, removing marker and passing yo and st on right needle over the new st.

Rnd 3 (pick up rnd): Pick up and knit 1 st, pass st on right needle (that was left there after BO rnd) over picked up st. Pick up and knit 1 st for every st of bound off edge to end of rnd.

Rnd 4 (dec rnd): *K8, ssk* until fewer than 10 sts remain, knit to end.

Repeat Rnds 2 and 3 once more.

Next rnd (dec rnd): K3, *ssk, k6* until fewer than 8 sts remain, ssk, knit to end.
Next rnd (BO rnd): Work as Rnd 2.

Weave in ends and block the sweater.
