Break yarn and place all sts on scrap yarn.
Left shoulder lace band:
With straight needles and using the long tail method, CO 4 sts.

Row 11: Purl to end.
Start working sleeve lace pattern:
Work as for right shoulder, but do not break yarn at the end – you will continue using it. Place all sts on scrap yarn.
UPPER BACK
Shoulder sts of the back are picked up along the edges of the two shoulder lace bands where you have placed removable markers, center back sts are cast on between the lace bands. Short rows are used to shape shoulders.
Pick up shoulder sts and CO neck sts for back:
Place the two lace bands with RS facing and cast-on ends next to each other, with the ends with scrap yarn to the outside, and the removable markers on both bands at the top.
With larger circular needle and yarn attached to right front, and RS facing,
• pick up and knit 45[45, 45, 61, 61, 61, 61, 76, 76, 76] sts along the longest side of left shoulder lace band marked with removable marker (approx 3 sts to every 4 rows of shoulder lace band for sizes 8-L, and approx 5 sts to every 7 rows for sizes 1X-3X), remove marker as you come to it,
• using the backward loop method, CO 19[23, 25, 29, 29, 31, 33, 33, 37, 37] neck sts,
• pick up and knit 45[45, 45, 61, 61, 61, 61, 76, 76, 76] sts along the longest side of right shoulder lace band marked with removable marker, remove marker as you come to it. 109[113, 115, 151, 151, 153, 155, 185, 189, 189] sts.
Next row (WS): Purl.
Work short rows to shape shoulders, and start working back lace pattern:
Note: The number of sts between the lace markers varies, depending on the row of the lace pattern.

There are 28[30, 30, 48, 47, 47, 47, 60, 62, 61] back sts each side of the lace pattern and 27[29, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 53, 53, 57] armhole rows, counted from shoulder lace band along the edge of armhole (so you do not count short rows), incl pick-up row.
Take a note of the last row worked for the back lace pattern so you know where to continue later. Place all sts on a spare circular needle, ensuring the lace pattern markers remain in place, and break the yarn. Turn work upside down, so the lace bands are at the top, and work upper front.
UPPER FRONT
Left front shoulder:
Front shoulder sts are picked up from the shoulder lace bands, opposite the back. The left and right shoulders are initially worked separately until the neck shaping is completed. At the same time, shoulders are shaped with short rows, as for the back.
Note: Use the backward loop method for the neck CO sts. You may replace any CO 1 with kfb on RS rows, and pfb on WS rows, if you prefer this method of increasing 1 st.
With straight needles and RS facing, starting from the neck end of left shoulder lace band, pick up and knit 39[39, 39, 55, 55, 55, 55, 70, 70, 70] sts (approx 3 sts to every 4 rows of shoulder lace band for sizes 8-L, and approx 5 sts to every 7 rows for sizes 1X-2X).
