It's time to give your odd balls and leftover scrap yarns a fresh new life as spring approaches. Made only with the scrap yarns in my stash, the Happy Sunshine scrappy vest is a cheerful project that adds warmth and color to your spring wardrobe. Each block is worked in a different textured stitch (you will never get bored while knitting!) connected with the intarsia technique. The best thing about this design is its adaptability: did you run out of a yarn partway through a section? Just switch to another color and texture combination –  it's all part of the charm. Not enough yarn to make the bottom trim, neck trim, and armhole trim in one color? You can make each part in a different color! Don't have enough worsted weight yarns in your stash? You can hold two strands of fingering weight yarn to achieve the correct thickness. Even one strand of laceweight yarn plus one strand of sportweight or one strand of laceweight plus one strand of lightweight DK may work too, as long as you can get the right tension. The combination possibilities are endless!

I challenged myself to only use the yarns that I had in my stash to make this vest without purchasing any new yarn. As a result, some sections have a slightly lighter thickness, and I had to dye some colors myself. You can make this project into your stash-busting challenge, too! By adapting this pattern to the status of your stash, your vest will be one-of-a-kind and uniquely yours. (In the end, no knitter will judge you for purchasing a few balls of new yarn to coordinate, though.)

MATERIALS

Yarn
The sample shown uses 100% superwash merino wool yarns of slightly varying thicknesses, but all within a similar weight range (197–220 yd / 180–201 m per 100 g skein).
All yarns used are multi-ply (6–8 plies) and high-twist, giving the fabric a stretchy, springy, and pleasantly squishy feel. See further information on yarn combination in Pattern Notes.
Note: Because this vest is designed for scrap yarn, below you'll find yarn weight, construction, and fiber content rather than specific yarn brands or colors so you can create your own version from your stash.

PATTERN NOTES

[Knitty's list of standard abbreviations and techniques can be found here.]

Construction method: The front and back body panels are knitted flat using the intarsia technique and sewn together at the side seams and shoulder seams. Stitches are picked up for neck trim and armhole trims, worked in the round, and cast off at the edge using the invisible bind-off method.

Yarn Combinations:
When mixing different yarns, choose ones with similar fiber content, twist, and care instructions to avoid uneven shrinkage or stretching over time. For example, even if two merino wool yarns are labeled the same weight, a high-twist superwash and a low-twist non-superwash will behave very differently when washed; they'll relax, stretch, and drape differently on the body.

When combining yarns to achieve a desired thickness, it helps to match the gram weight per meter of your combination. For instance, Plymouth Yarn Worsted Merino Superwash weighs approximately 0.5 grams per meter (199 meters per 100g, so 100 ÷ 199 = 0.5). Holding two strands of Cascade Heritage fingering weight together, each weighing 0.25 grams per meter (400m per 100g), gives you the same total weight: 0.25 + 0.25 = 0.5 grams per meter. You can also pair one strand of Malabrigo Arroyo in sport weight (0.32g/m) with one strand of Blackhill Højlandsuld lace (0.18g/m), which also totals 0.5g/m. Your combined yarns don't need to match perfectly. If they're within about 10% of the target weight and share similar fiber types and construction, the difference is generally negligible when knitted together. To be sure, knit a swatch to check if the tension matches.

Color Diagram: See Color Diagram below the CHART section to confirm placement of pattern stitches and colors. Stitch and row counts are indicated as reference; the pattern instructions provide full details on how to actually work the various sections.

Body Panel Shaping:

This vest is intentionally shaped with different lengths and widths in specific parts of the front and back panels to ensure a flattering fit that flows naturally along the contours of the body. The shaping details are as follows:

  • The side seam length of the back panel is slightly shorter than that of the front panel and should be gently stretched when sewing the side seams together.
  • The back armhole is slightly taller than the front armhole, causing the shoulder seam to roll forward by approximately 0.5 inches/1.3cm when sewn.
  • From the hem to the underarm, the front panel is wider than the back panel.
  • From the underarm to the shoulder, the front panel is narrower than the back panel.
  • Before seaming, the front neckline width is narrower than the back neckline width.

FINISHING

With a tapestry needle or a crochet hook and with WS facing, join front and back body panels along the side seams and the shoulder seams. Gently stretch the back side seam to match the length of the front side seam, then secure them together with sewing clips before seaming (either by sewing or crocheting) along the sides.

Trims
Note: The magic loop circular knitting method is highly recommended for working the armhole and neck trims.

Armhole Trims
With the smaller circular needle or DPNs and Yarn E, starting at the center of the underarm, pick up and knit 88[98, 106, 116, 124, 134, 140, 150, 156] sts evenly around armhole. Join to work in the round.
Work in 1x1 Rib for 6 rounds.
Bind off all sts using Tubular bind off method.

Repeat for other side.

Neck Trim
With the smaller circular needle or DPNs and Yarn E, pick up and knit 48[50, 50, 54, 54, 58, 60, 62, 62] sts evenly across front neck, then pick up and knit 42[44, 44, 46, 46, 48, 48, 50, 50] across back neck. Join to work in the round.
Work in 1x1 Rib for 8 rounds.
Bind off all sts using Tubular bind off method.

Work Duplicate Stitch as shown on Flower Charts. Weave in all yarn tails using a tapestry needle and/or a crochet hook. Wash and block to measurements.

Note: Due to the mix of different stitches (and possibly different yarns), the vest may appear a bit wobbly before blocking. Block it using the same method you used for your tension swatch. If you used animal fiber yarns—especially superwash merino or alpaca—the vest might look up to two sizes too big when wet. Don't panic. Simply reshape it according to the measurements in the diagram. It will return to the intended shape once fully dry. Also note that the back body length will be approximately 0.75 inch/2 cm shorter than the front, which helps prevent sagging at the back when worn.
