Pattern: Dealán Dé cabled hat. Free knitting pattern in three sizes for a cabled hat with a decorative button on the brim
INTRODUCTION
Dealán Dé
This snug-fitting cloche style hat is finished with a butterfly button which gives the hat its name.
Starting with a loose-ish cast on, the hat is knit sideways using short row wedges. The twisted stitch cable band is edged with two cables whilst the crown of the hat is worked in short row garter stitch. After sufficient repeats of the cable pattern and short row wedges, the garter stitch bind off is sewn together with the garter stitch cast on. If you prefer a seamless edge, you could cast on with a provisional cast on and graft together with the live stitches. The brim then decreases in pattern into a point which is secured to the brim with a button.
Dealán Dé (pronounced Dee Ah Lawn Jay) is an old Gaelic word for butterfly although directly translates as God’s lightning.

PATTERN NOTES
[Knitty's list of standard abbreviations and techniques can be found here.]
Short Rows: I use the German method of creating short rows in the hat – use whichever method you prefer. If you are working the “wrap and turn”, work this at the turning point, and ignore the “SR” instruction at the start of the following row. And then work the wrapped stitches together with their wraps as you come to them.
As you are working in garter stitch, the wraps don’t need to be hidden as they will blend in.
SR: WS is facing. Bring yarn to the front. Sl St p-wise and bring yarn up, over and back to pull on the slipped stitch until it slides around to show two legs. Keeping the yarn at the back in order to k next st while keeping the tension. When working the stitch the next time you meet it, work the “doubled stitch” as if it were one – that is, work the two legs together.
C2F: Sl the next st onto cn and hold in front, k next st, then k st from cn.
C2B: Sl the next st onto cn and hold in back, k next st, then k st from cn.
T2F: Sl the next st onto cn and hold in front, p next st, then k st from cn.
T2B: Sl the next st onto cn and hold in back, k next st, then p st from cn.
