Alata is perfect as an extra layer of warmth in the dead of
winter (or as an outer layer in early spring or fall), falling
past the hip for a flattering, easy-to-wear fit. Even in frigid
weather, I tend to overheat if covered from chin to wrists in
wool, so I designed Alata with short sleeves and a slightly open
neck to keep the torso warm, yet still allow some ventilation
(you can always add a scarf if the wind is biting!). Bonus: those
short sleeves and eased neckline slide smoothly over a turtleneck
or blouse.
A bold winged lace cable accents center front, back and sleeves
(Alata is Italian for "winged"
). Alata is worked entirely
in the round from the bottom up, with self-finished
hem, neck and sleeve edgings. Front and back are
identical.
Work Alata in a smoldering orange like I did, and you may not
even need to light a fire to stay cozy!

PATTERN NOTES [Knitty's list of standard abbreviations and techniques can be found here.]
I designed this pullover to have roughly the same amount of
ease at hip and bust, using standard measurements; in other words,
hip circumference is about 2 inches greater than bust circumference.
To increase the bust circumference by 1 or 1.75 inches, simply
add one or two extra increase rounds spaced 12 rows apart—but
remember that extra stitches will need to be bound off at the
underarm to avoid having to change raglan decreases.
The body and sleeve lengths have been calculated so that they
end on the same pattern round in all sizes, so body or sleeve
length must be changed in increments of just under 2 inches (one
full pattern repeat).
C5B: Sl next 5 sts to cable needle and hold
at back of work, k 5 sts from left needle,
k 5 sts from cable needle.
M1L: Make left leaning stitch:
Insert left needle, from front to back,
under strand of yarn which runs between
last stitch on left needle and first
stitch on right needle; knit this stitch
through back loop.
1 stitch increased.
M1R: Make right leaning stitch:
Insert left needle, from back to front,
under strand of yarn which runs between
last stitch on left needle and first stitch on right needle;
knit this stitch through front loop.
1 stitch increased.
