INTRODUCTION
Evergreen Garden

by Sabine Hajostek
![]()
In the cold and dark winter months I really enjoy the evergreen plants in the backyard that add a splash of color when everything else is gray. They always remind me that better – and warmer – days are coming! The lace pattern in this cardigan echoes the shape of the evergreen leaves.
This cardigan is a great layering piece, more feminine and cozier than a blazer but elegant enough for festive occasions. The sleeves are wide enough to accommodate a long-sleeved shirt or blouse underneath.
The cardigan is knitted from the top down without the need for sewing. It is designed to be worn with little to zero ease around the bust and a little more width around the hips. Each size has been carefully designed for a good fit, and the pattern also includes several adjustment points with tips how to customize the fit for your figure.

MATERIALS
Yarn
Mayflower Easy Care Classic [100% Merino wool; 115 yd/105 m per 1.76 oz/50 g skein]; color: Lake Blue; 8[9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, 18] skeins
Yarn Characteristics
The sample shown uses a DK weight superwash wool yarn. A wool blend (wool-silk, wool-cotton, or wool-acrylic) will also work.
This pattern works best with solid, tonal, or slightly variegated colorways. Wildly variegated yarns will obscure the lace pattern.
Recommended needle size
[always use a needle size that gives you the gauge listed below - every knitter's gauge is unique]

1 set US #6/4mm needles for small circumference in the round
Notions
15[17, 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 29, 31] stitch markers
removable stitch markers for Japanese short rows
4-6 pieces of scrap yarn to mark button placement
4-6 buttons (number depends on your choices at the adjustment points)
2 stitch holders (or spare circular knitting needles, or some waste yarn), minimum 20 inches/50 cm length
1 long piece of rubber tubing or waste yarn for trying on the piece while it is still in progress (should be long enough to go around your body, with some additional length to knot the ends).

21 sts / 31 rows in 4 inches/10 cm in Lace pattern
PATTERN NOTES
[Knitty's list of standard abbreviations and techniques can be found here.]
Construction method: This cardigan is worked from the top down, without seams. The upper back is worked flat, including the neckband; then you pick up stitches along the shoulders and work the upper part of the fronts, including the button bands. When the armhole is deep enough, you work some armhole shaping and join the fronts to the back. The rest of the body is completed in one piece, working body shaping as desired. For the sleeves, you pick up stitches along the armholes and work short rows to shape the sleeve cap, then you pick up the underarm stitches and work the rest of the sleeve in the round.
CDD: Slip 2 sts together knitwise, k1, pass slipped sts over.
Pbm: place button marker. Tie a piece of scrap yarn into the stitch you just knitted. These markers will remain in place to indicate where exactly the buttons need to go to match the buttonholes. You will remove these markers at the end, while sewing on the buttons.
Short rows:
- JAPANESE
JSR (Japanese Short Row): - On a RS row, keep the working yarn at the back | On a WS row, keep the working yarn at the front
- Slip the first st on the left needle purlwise onto the right needle. Place a removable stitch marker around your working yarn, close to that slipped st. Then knit or purl the next st as usual. The marker now sits between the slipped st and the st you just worked. Continue knitting or purling as usual.
- Resolving Japanese Short Rows:
- On a knit row, knit to the gap. Tug on the marker to pull up a loop and place it on the left needle, with the loop's right leg in the front. Knit the next st together with that loop and continue to work as usual.
- On a purl row, purl to the gap. Keeping the working yarn at the front of the work, slip the next st purlwise. Tug on the marker to pull up a loop and place it on the left needle, with the loop's right leg in the front. Put the slipped st back onto the left needle, taking care not to twist it, and purl it together with the loop. Continue to work as usual.
- GERMAN
Create DS (Double Stitch): , used when working German short rows.- To create a DS on the WS: Slip 1 st purlwise with the yarn in front. Tug the yarn firmly upwards and take it over the needle to the back and around to the front again, into position for purling; the two legs of the stitch will be up on the needle. Work the next sts as indicated, keeping the tension a little tighter than usual for 1 or 2 sts, then going back to your regular tension.
- To create a DS on the RS: Move the yarn between the needles to the front of the work. Slip 1 st purlwise with the yarn in front. Tug the yarn firmly upwards and take it over the needle to the back into position for knitting; the two legs of the stitch will be up on the needle. Work the next sts as indicated, keeping the tension a little tighter than usual for 1 or 2 sts, then going back to your regular tension.

Right Sleeve
To work the sleeves, you will first pick up sts along the edge, one st from every row of the body, for a neat look. Then you will work short rows to shape the sleeve cap, decreasing away a number of sts for a smooth fit.
For the sleeve cap, the German Short Row method gives the best structure along the edges of the armholes.
After finishing the sleeve cap, you will continue the sleeve in the round, working decreases on the underside to shape the sleeve. In the end you will work a lace pattern to embellish the lower part of the sleeve.
Pick-up stitches along the right armhole as follows:
Count off 18[20, 20, 20, 22, 22, 24, 24, 26] rows along the armhole edge, starting from the CO on the top of the right shoulder and counting towards the underarm, and place a removable marker. Do this on back and front.
With RS of Back facing you, start at the marker on the back, rejoin yarn and using needles for small circumference in the round, pick up and knit 18[20, 20, 20, 22, 22, 24, 24, 26] sts on the back armhole, moving towards the top of the shoulder, and then pick up and knit 18[20, 20, 20, 22, 22, 24, 24, 26] sts on the right front armhole to the front marker. Remove the marker from the armhole edge and place it onto the needle.
On the straight section of the front armhole, pick up and knit 26[28, 30, 34, 34, 36, 36, 38, 38] sts, pm.
From the curved section before the underarm cast-on, pick up and knit 4[5, 5, 5, 7, 7, 9, 11, 11] sts, pm.
From the underarm cast-on, pick up and knit 4[6, 8, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18] sts, pm.
From the curved section after the underarm cast-on, pick up and knit 4[5, 5, 5, 7, 7, 9, 11, 11] sts, pm.
From the remaining straight section of the back armhole, pick up and knit 26[28, 30, 34, 34, 36, 36, 38, 38] sts, pm to mark the beginning of the round. 100[112, 118, 126, 136, 142, 152, 162, 168] sts.
Working the sleeve cap:
Sleeve Cap Setup Row 1 [RS]: (K1, k2tog, k1) to m, remove m, turn. 27[30, 30, 30, 33, 33, 36, 36, 39] sts between BOR and turning point. 91[102, 108, 116, 125, 131, 140, 150, 155] sts in total.
Sleeve Cap Setup Row 2 [WS]: Create DS, p to m, remove m, turn.
Now you will continue working short rows for the sleeve cap, working decreases as described to reduce the number of stitches.
Upper Sleeve Cap Row 1 [RS]: Create DS, k to turning point, k DS from previous row as a regular st, k2tog, turn. 1 st decreased.
Upper Sleeve Cap Row 2: [WS] Create DS, p to turning point, p DS from previous row as a regular st, p2tog, turn. 1 st decreased.
Repeat Upper Sleeve Cap Rows 1-2 9[10, 11, 13, 13, 14, 14, 15, 15] more times until there remain 6 sts unworked before the next marker. 71[80, 84, 88, 97, 101, 110, 118, 123] sts.
Lower Sleeve Cap Row 1: Create DS, k to turning point, k DS as a regular st, k1, turn.
Lower Sleeve Cap Row 2: Create DS, p to turning point, p DS as a regular st, p1, turn.
Lower Sleeve Cap Row 3: Create DS, k to turning point, k DS as a regular st, k2tog, turn. 1 st decreased.
