Frühlingsblümchen

Take a closer look at the three-dimensional flowers on the broader end of this shawl. You probably think they're a crochet appliqué stitched on the knitting after the fact, right? Well, they are crochet, but they're worked while you're knitting, without cutting the yarn. If you've worked a crochet bobble in the middle of a knit row (a popular technique in Japanese stitch dictionaries), it's very similar, but instead of making a bobble you're crocheting a flower in the middle of the row.

The unusual shaping of this shawl is a shape of my own invention, which I call a "diamond kite". This shape is symmetrical along the vertical axis, and there are decreases along the outer edges to slow the rate of increases while creating some internal biasing. A typical diamond kite scarf will gain two stitches every four or five rows. The biasing of this construction is great for showing off bold variegated yarns. I like to cast-on for these pieces by using a circular cast-on, but instead of redistributing the stitches to work in the round, I turn to work flat. It cinches in the cast-on at the tip to look pointy, but I think it's a bit tidier than doing a single slip knot and then doing a bunch of increases into it.

The name is German for "spring blooms/flowers", and it uses the diminutive form, a.k.a. what you do to make a word cuter. And this compound word also has two umlauts, which makes it that much cooler.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS

At gauge given, piece measures
Length at center: 70.5 inches/179 cm
Width at widest point: 28 inches/71 cm
Length along side edges: 63.5 inches/161 cm

MATERIALS

Yarn
spacer Handmaiden Fine Yarn Lino [65% silk, 35% linen; 875 yd/800 m per 3.5 oz/100 g skein]; color: Hibiscus; 1 skein

Yarn Characteristics
spacer The sample uses a laceweight silk/linen blend that drapes beautifully. Any laceweight that takes a block well will work, but for best results chose a yarn with similar drape.

Recommended needle size
[always use a needle size that gives you the gauge listed below - every knitter's gauge is unique]
spacer 1 US #4/3.5mm circular needle, 24inch/60 cm or longer
spacer 1 US #E/3.5mm hook

Notions
spacer 1 crochet hook several sizes smaller than your knitting needle size for Emily Ocker cast-on
spacer optional stitch markers
spacer blocking mat
spacer lots of t-pins
spacer optional flexible blocking wires
spacer yarn needle

GAUGE

21 sts/31 rows = 4 inches/10 cm in stockinette stitch
21 sts/31 rows = 4 inches/10 cm in Pattern B

Note: It's not crucial to work to the gauge specified for this project, but a difference in gauge can change the look of the fabric, will result in a different finished size, and may affect yardage required.

PATTERN NOTES

[Knitty's list of standard abbreviations and techniques can be found here.]

Construction method: The cast-on is done with a circular method to make the bottom tip of the scarf pointier. However, instead of rearranging the stitches into the round, simply turn the work and start working flat. After a few rows, pull the tail as tight as you can to cinch the cast-on. The setup charts establish the center column of pattern stitches, and the lace patterned part of the selvedge. After the setup, the wedges between the selvedge and center will increase at the center every other row, but there will be decreases at the outer edge of the wedge so the overall increase rate is slowed to 4 stitches every ten rows. This shaping adds biasing to these panels.

Techniques:

  • Emily Ocker's cast-on – stop after step 5. This circular method looks tidiest if using a hook 2-3 sizes smaller than your knitting needle size.
  • LPI: [Left lifted Purl Increase] With left needle lift the left leg of the stitch below the stitch just worked, and purl it. 1 stitch increased.
  • RPI: [Right lifted Purl Increase] With right needle lift the right leg of the stitch below the next stitch, and purl it. 1 stitch increased.
  • Flower: K1 into stitch in the row below, dropping stitch from the needle. Place that loop on a crochet hook. Ch 1, working into the 2 loops of the knit stitch as if it’s a magic ring, (dc, ch3, sl st into the same knit stitch) 6 times. Remove loop from hook, insert hook through top of first dc, put active loop back on hook and pull through stitch. Hold yarn to back and put this loop onto the right knitting needle.
On following row if you like, you can shrink the elongated stitch by rewrapping to create two wraps, and knit those wraps together.

FINISHING

Weave in ends and wash shawl using a wool or other gentle fabric/lingerie wash. Block by threading blocking wires through the long edges, and pin the wires to shape the shawl, making certain that center column is spread open. Pin out the bind-off edge to create points. Reshape crochet flowers as needed. When thoroughly dry, unpin, and trim woven-in ends.
