When my friend Amy Tart found out she was pregnant I found myself thinking that I needed to create something to commemorate the occasion.

I thought of purses in the shape of pies, or tarts and other items but nothing clicked.

Then one day I was browsing yarn on eBay and saw a wonderful purplish color named Raspberry. I thought, I could knit her a raspberry beret. But then I thought, "I could make a baby hat that looks like a little berry tart!" So I set out looking for the perfect crust color and perfect berry color yarn, in cotton.

It's so cute I could eat it.

Bobbled Berry Filling Pattern

Row 1: Purl.

Row 2: *p2, bbl inc.* Repeat to end of row.

Row 3: Purl.

Row 4: *p2, bbl dec.* Repeat to end of row.

Row 5: Purl.

Row 6: *bbl inc, p2.* Repeat to end of row.

Row 7: Purl.

Row 8: *bbl dec, p2.* Repeat to end of row.

Note: Since it is easy to lose or gain stitches during this pattern, I recommend keeping a multiple of 3 stitches on each needle if using dpns. If using a circular needle place stitch markers evenly spaced, making sure there is a multiple of 3 stitches between markers.

DIRECTIONS

Crust Hat Brim

Using circular needle and CC, CO 156[168, 180, 186, 198] stitches. Use stitch marker to mark beginning of row and knit one round.

Row 2: *K5, k2tog.* Repeat to stitch marker.

Row 3: *K4, k2tog.* Repeat to stitch marker.

Row 4: *K3, k2tog.* Repeat to stitch marker.

Row 5: *K2, k2tog.* Repeat to stitch marker.

Row 6: Count to make sure there are an even number of stitches on needle. Increase one stitch if necessary as you purl one round.

Row 7: *K1, P1* Repeat to stitch marker.

Repeat row 7 6[7, 9, 11, 13] times.

BO all sts.

Berry Filling or Hat Top

Using MC pick up 66[72, 78, 81, 87] sts evenly spaced along the purl ridge created before you began ribbing. To get hat to lay correctly when finished, pick up sts with the ruffly edge toward you and the ribbing away as shown in picture.

Knit one row.

Begin "berry filling" or bobble pattern.

When there are 4[5, 6, 7, 7] bobble rounds [not repetitions of pattern] begin decreases on either row 1 or row 5 of bobble pattern.

Important note: The last stitch on your needle after you complete a decrease round becomes the first stitch of the next row.

FINISHING

Place hat over balloon blown up to correct head size. Wet hat with warm water from a spray bottle and set out to dry. Crust ruffle should curl a bit but if it seems to point toward the bottom of hat, you can pin in place. Weave in ends. Eat it or wear it!
