Tangy

Thysania is a hybrid of a shawl and a cardigan, or an oversized shrug. I was skeptical about this type of piece, because I had tried on one or two that I didn't find flattering on me, but I had also seen some really nice ones and so I decided to challenge myself to create a one that would work for me. I believe that the key is to make it big enough, and I spent a good amount of time studying the shape and proportions to create the four sizes included.

A very engaging cable and eyelet pattern adorns a simple rectangle, which is sewn up to create armholes. Sitches are then picked up for sleeve cuffs and a generous collar.

DIRECTIONS

With larger needles, CO 188[188, 200, 200] sts.
Begin openwork cable pattern stitch, working from chart or written instructions.
Rep Rows 1-12, 22[24, 27, 29] times.
Bind off in pattern.

FINISHING

Block piece to measurements on schematic.
Place markers for sleeve opening at points 2 and 4. Match 3 to 3 and 4 to 4, and sew seam from 3 to 4. Match 1 to 1 and 2 to 2, and sew seam from 1 to 2.

Sleeve Cuffs
Using smaller needles for working small circumference in the round, pick up and knit 60 sts around sleeve opening. Pm and join for working in the rnd. Work in k2, p2 rib for 4 inches. Bind off in rib.

Repeat on other side.

Edging
Beginning at either seam, using long circular needle, pick up and knit 212[230, 260, 278] across one long edge to the second side seam, then pick up and knit 212[230, 260, 278] sts across 2nd long edge to where you started (approximately 4 sts for every 5 rows).

Note: if your stitch count isn't exactly right, that's okay as long as you are in the ballpark and end with a multiple of 4 sts total on your needle.

Pm and join for working in the rnd. Work in k2, p2 rib for 4 inches. Bind off in rib.
