INTRODUCTION

Echo

beauty shot

by

Tangy

For this project, I envisioned a boxy, comfy sweatshirt-type sweater that was not only unisex (think of the boyfriend sweater that you "borrow" from time to time) but also reversible, so it could look slightly different depending on who is wearing the sweater. I love textures that don't require constantly referring to a chart to knit. This one is easy to memorize, so it can be worked on the go. The stitch patt reminded me of echo wave charts and since I intended to wear mine as a hiking/ outdoor sweater. I loved the idea of hiking in a canyon with the echoes of nature.

Sweatshirts are typically too tight around the neck for me, so this one is cut generously and the shoulder shaping helps keep the ribbing from digging into your neck, allowing you to move freely. This sweater is worked seamlessly, because when you are done knitting, you just want to be done! The patt is worked from the bottom up, and the shoulders are grafted together after some short row shaping. The neck is then worked using held stitches and then the sleeves are picked up from the body and worked down to cuff. Weave in some ends and you are ready to go.The split hem and the faux seam up the side of the sweater that continues under the sleeve make the sweater look a little more "finished".

Two ease ranges are given below but choose the type of fit that you desire for the type of for which activity it will be used.

Yarn

Yarn Characteristics
spacer The sample shown uses a worsted-weight sustainable recycled polyester yarn. The yarn is soft and has a wool-like feel, but is made for durable wear and is machine washable and dryable for easy care. Some colors have a slight tweed coloring for a more interesting sweater…and it's affordable! If you substitute, choose a plied yarn with memory, like non-superwash wool or blends.

PATTERN NOTES

[Knitty's list of standard abbreviations and techniques can be found here.]

Construction method: The body of this pullover is worked seamlessly in the round from the hem up. The sweater is then split for sleeves and worked flat, before finishing at the shoulders by grafting. Sleeves are then picked up from the body and worked in the round down to the cuff.

Techniques:

  • Tubular bind off
  • Grafting
  • Faux side seams: the 4 sts at the sides of the sweater between markers will be purled on each round (reverse St st) with the front and back panels worked in the chart.

Tip: The sweater can be worn with either side out. When attaching a new skein of yarn, be careful how you weave in the tails so it is clean on both sides of the sweater.

Row 1 [RS]: Sl1, *k1, p1; repeat from * to end of row.
Row 2 [WS]: Sl1, *p1, k1; repeat from * to end of row.
Repeat Rows 1-2 for 2 inches/5 cm, ending after Row 2.
Cut yarn on first ribbing, on second ribbing do not cut working yarn.
Turn work.

Body
Join to work in the round (making sure RS are facing out) as follows: Work in ribbing as est to last st, pm, work last st, attach second ribbing, work first st, pm, work in ribbing to last st, pm, work last st. Place a BOR marker.

Round 1: Purl to end.
Round 2: Knit to end.
Rounds 3-4: Repeat Rounds 1-2.
Set up round: P1, place marker, *work st patt from chart or written instructions, working patt repeat 1[1, 2, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3] times to next st marker, sm, M1R, p2, M1L, slip marker; repeat from * once, work in patt to start of chart panel. 4 sts increased, 154[170, 190, 206, 226, 242, 262, 278, 298] sts total. Note: In this round you will go past the BOR marker. Start the next round at the chart panel and work to the BOR as noted below, and purling newly made sts at side seams.

Work from chart or written instructions until piece measures 15[15, 15, 16, 16, 17, 17, 18, 18] inches/ 38[38, 38, 41, 41, 43, 43, 46, 46] cm, or desired length, to underarm.

Split for sleeves:
Note: the front and back are worked at the same time.

Work in patt as est across front of sweater to side marker, sm, p2tog, with a new strand of yarn for the Back, p2tog, slip marker, work remaining sts in patt as est to side panel, slip marker, p2tog, slip the remaining purl st from side to front of sweater, turn work, (k1, work in patt as est to last st on back of sweater, k1), repeat for front to last 2 sts of front, k2tog. 75[83, 93, 101, 111, 119, 129, 137, 147] sts each for Front and Back.

Continue working in patt as est, working the front and back flat and using 2 skeins of yarn, until armhole measures 4[4.5, 5, 5.5, 6, 6.5, 7, 7.5, 8] inches/ 10[11, 13, 14, 15, 17, 18, 19, 20] cm from armhole split, ending after a RS row.

Front neck shaping
Next row [WS]: Work Right Front in patt as est over 30[34, 38, 42, 46, 50, 54, 58, 63] sts, slide the next 15[15, 17, 17, 19, 19, 21, 21, 21] sts to a holder or extra needle after working them, work remaining 30[34, 38, 42, 46, 50, 54, 58, 63] sts in patt as est, 30[34, 38, 42, 46, 50, 54, 58, 63] sts, for Right Front, 30[34, 38, 42, 46, 50, 54, 58, 63] sts for Left Front; 15[15, 17, 17, 19, 19, 21, 21, 21] sts held in the center for the front neckline.

Right front
Work over only the first 30[34, 38, 42, 46, 50, 54, 58, 63] sts to shape the Right Front. Work the 1 neckline edge st in St st even when patt indicates a purl, so picking up the neckline sts will be cleaner.
