INTRODUCTION

Juliet

beauty shot

by

Piquant

Juliet is a cardigan sweater inspired by the character in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Romantic, flirty, and with a flair for drama, Juliet captures the feminine side of sweaters and is sure to be a piece that grabs attention.

One of the aspects that excites me about sweater design is how the elements of style mix with the functional design of the garment. This piece draws on Japanese lace knitting patterns, and I chose these elements for the way they frame the body and exude grace. This cardigan features a feminine silhouette, accented by the waist shaping and set in sleeves. The back lace panel provides its focus point, and the front lace panels pull a few of its features into a complementary design all their own. The overall effect is a classic, timeless cardigan.

PATTERN NOTES

[Knitty's list of standard abbreviations and techniques can be found here.]

Construction method: The sweater is worked in pieces from the bottom up. The pieces are then sewn together and the button bands and neck band are worked to finish the garment. The Back Lace Panel, Right Front Lace Panel, and Left Front Lace Panel are indicated in the directions and marked in the piece by stitch markers. The lace panels are worked as established (repeating the chart pattern/written instructions) from the bottom to the cast off.

Tips:

  • A selvage stitch in garter stitch is included in the pattern directions to make easier sewing pieces together.
  • When working shaping and lace patterns at the same time, all yarnovers in the last row before the bind off can be substituted with a knit stitch to make the bind off smooth. Make sure, if working yarnovers as knit stitches, to balance by not working the corresponding decreases.

Techniques:

  • crochet cast on (video)
  • sloped bind-off (video with text instructions)
  • One-row buttonhole: Bring yarn forward, sl1 purlwise, bring yarn back, *sl the next st on left needle to right needle, psso; rep from * two times more. Sl last st on right needle back to left needle purlwise. Turn work. Using knitted cast-on, CO 3 sts. Turn work. Sl first st on left needle to right needle purlwise, and pass the last CO st over this st.

SPECIAL STITCHES

  • L3o (k1, yo, k1): Insert tip of right needle into the 3rd stitch, lift over the first two stitches and let it drop off needle, k1, yo, k1.
  • sssk: Slip 3 sts separately knitwise, slip sts back to left needle, then slip 3 sts together through back of loops.
  • S2kp2: Slip 2 sts togethether knitwise, k1, pass 2 slipped sts over knitted st.
  • 3 stitch bobble from below: Insert needle into center stitch 3 rows below, pull up a loop of yarn, yo, insert needle into same stitch 3 rows below and pull up another loop of yarn. Drop the next stitch on left needle. 3 stitches created from 1 stitch.
