Pentwater

Pentwater is exactly the kind of pullover I want to wear after a summer day outside, when the sun is setting and a slight chill is falling on my fresh sunburn. Evoking the sight of rippled sand and pebbles under the changing tide, Pentwater is roomy and airy enough to throw over any outfit.

With a wide neck and a roomy, boxy fit, the Pentwater pullover is knit seamlessly from the top down with a modified, sloping drop shoulder. The front and back are worked flat separately, then rejoined in the round for simple knitting. The lace pattern is straightforward and simple enough for even the beginner lace knitter.

Yarn Characteristics
The sample shown uses a plied DK-weight cotton yarn blended with wool. The yarn is smooth and provides drape with some give from the wool. Another blend of wool and plant or plant-derived fiber (such as linen or bamboo) or an acrylic or acrylic blend should also work here. You will want to make sure it has some memory so it doesn't stretch out of shape, or that it will snap back to measurements out of the dryer (if it's a machine-dry friendly yarn).

Construction method: This pullover is worked seamlessly in the round from the top down to the armholes, where the front and back are worked flat separately. The body is joined again in the round under the arms and worked in the round. Sleeves are picked up and knit in the round.

When increasing in Lace Pattern, make sure to keep stitch counts correct and keep any decreases or yarnovers balanced with a corresponding increase or decrease. Work partial pattern repeats in St st, if necessary.

Begin shoulder increases:
Round 1: *Work Lace Pattern to m, M1R, sl m, k4, sl m, M1L; rep from * once more, work Lace Pattern to end. 4 sts increased.
Round 2: *Patt to m, sl m, k4, sl m; rep from * once more, patt to end.

Repeat Rounds 1-2 16[14, 17, 19, 22, 22, 23, 26, 26] times more, working increased sts into patt (see Pattern Notes) and changing to longer circ when necessary. 83[84, 90, 96, 102, 102, 108, 114, 114] sts each for Front and Back;
 174[176, 188, 200, 212, 212, 224, 236, 236] sts total.

Separate Front and Back:
Next row [RS]: Patt to m, remove m, BO next 4 sts (removing m), patt to next m, remove m, K4, remove m, turn.
Next row [WS]: BO 4 sts, work Lace Pattern to next BO, turn and cont on these 83[84, 90, 96, 102, 102, 108, 114, 114] sts only for Front.

Front
Work in Lace Pattern until work measures 4.5[5, 4.5, 4.5, 4, 4.5, 4.5, 4.5, 5] inches / 11.5[12.5, 11.5, 11.5, 10, 11.5, 11.5, 11.5, 12.5] cm from separation of Front and Back, ending after a WS row.

Next row [RS]: Patt to end of row, CO 1[2, 3, 3, 4, 6, 6, 7, 8] sts.

Repeat last 2 rows twice more. 89[96, 108, 114, 126, 138, 144, 156, 162] sts.

Break yarn. Make note of the last row of Lace Pattern worked.**

Back
Move Back sts to longest circ and join yarn with RS facing. Work as for Front to **, but do not break yarn.

Body
Joining rnd: Patt across Back, pm, with RS facing, work across held sts of Front. Pm and join to work in the rnd. 178[192, 216, 228, 252, 276, 288, 312, 324] sts.

Cont working in Lace Pattern as est over Front and Back until a total of four 40-rnd/row repeats of Lace Pattern have been worked from neck, then work Rounds 1-24 of Lace Pattern 0[0, 0, 0, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1] times more ( 160[160, 160, 160, 184, 184, 184, 184, 184] rnds/rows total), or to desired length, ending after desired rnd of Lace Pattern.

Hem
Break yarn and join CC2 (if necessary).

Round 1: Knit.
Rounds 2-4: Purl.
BO purlwise.

Sleeves
Attach MC at centre of underarm. With needles for working short circumference in the round, pick up and knit 54[60, 66, 66, 72, 84, 90, 96, 102] sts evenly around sleeve opening. Join to work in the round and pm for beg of round.

Work Rounds 1-24 of Lace Pattern over all sts once, working 6-st repeat 9[10, 11, 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, 17] times in total across each round.

Work Rounds 25-40 of Lace Pattern three times or until Sleeve measures 4 rounds shorter than desired length.

Cuff
Break all yarns and join CC2 (if necessary).

Round 1: Knit.
Rounds 2-4: Purl.
BO purlwise.

Repeat for other Sleeve.

FINISHING

Weave in all ends. Wash and block gently to measurements.
