INTRODUCTION

Gorwelion

beauty shotby

Piquant

While we were moving from the East Coast to Colorado little over a year ago, we spent several days taking our time and sightseeing along the way. After the long drive through the vast plains of the American Midwest, it was incredible to see the tall peaks of the Rocky Mountains pop up over the horizon. Standing in a field of wildflowers in the flat prairie and seeing the tall rugged peaks on the horizon was breathtaking and it was hands-down my favorite part of the trip.

The view was so inspiring that I began designing this shawl right then and there. I started with three colors inspired by the view: blue for the endless sky, white for the mountain peaks, and green for the grasslands. To mimic the undulating horizon lines, I used easy lace together with simple stripes, and I added a few sparkling beads along the edge for additional texture and drape (optional, the project can be completed without the beads).

By the way, gorwelion is just one of several intriguing words meaning "horizons" in Welsh.

PATTERN NOTES

[Knitty's list of standard abbreviations and techniques can be found here.]

Construction method:
This triangular shawl is worked in one piece, side-to-side, from a tiny five-stitch cast on, and it increases along one edge forming a practical, elongated shape; each RS row increases the total stitch count by one stitch. A simple yarn over edging is worked along the two longer sides; this can be used for finishing since the blocking wires can be easily threaded through the yarn overs.

Garter pattern:
Row 1 [RS]: K1, k2tog, yo, knit to last 2 sts, yo, k2. 1 st increased.
Row 2 [WS]: Knit.
Repeat Rows 1-2 for pattern.

Techniques:

  • Double yarnovers: On right side work yarn over two times; on wrong side work the two yarnovers as k1, p1 or p1, k1.
  • Work all uncharted wrong side rows as follows (except double yarnovers): K3, purl to last 3 sts, working (k1, p1) into double yarnovers, k3.
  • Centered Double Increase (M): Work (k1, yo, k1) into a single stitch. 2 sts increased. Note that there are two different symbols for this stitch. There's a compact symbol on the Flora chart, but a more accurate symbol on the Waves and Ripples chart.
  • Bead Placement (optional): The beads are placed using a slender steel crochet hook. To place a bead on a stitch, insert the hook through the hole in the bead and slide the bead up onto the hook. Pick the stitch off the needle with the hook and slide the bead down onto the stitch. Slip the stitch back to left needle and knit it. Note: if not using beads, simply knit the stitch.

FINISHING

Weave in all loose ends but don't trim the tails.

Wet-block the triangle as follows: Submerge your shawl in cool water with a bit of mild soap or wool wash, and leave to soak for 15-20 minutes. Remove excess water by wrapping your shawl in a towel and gently squeezing until the project is just damp. Now stretch the shawl into the triangular shape by pinning the three sides. To help with this process, blocking wires can be threaded through the yarn over edges along the two straight sides. Finish by stretching and pinning the lace points along the third side, creating pretty scallops at the edge.

When your shawl is completely dry, remove the pins and trim all yarn tails.
