INTRODUCTION
Silverbirch
by Rachel Brockman
Snuggle up all winter in the Silverbirch cardigan. This lofty piece marries a wrap and a sweater, hugging your shoulders and ensuring you will feel cozy whenever you wear it. The design was inspired by the textures of a forest – a maze of beautiful trees in various shapes and sizes, symbolized through the many cable motifs that decorate the sweater. The silvery white, textured, peeling bark of birch trees served as inspiration for the collar in which a luxurious eyelash yarn gives a frayed appearance.
Silverbirch is knit using Universal Yarn Posh Alpaca and Minou. Posh Alpaca is a plump blend of wool, superfine alpaca, and acrylic. It feels amazingly lightweight while keeping you warm and comfortable on even the most frigid days. Minou is a fresh take on an eyelash yarn. It is incredibly soft and features fluffy strands of baby alpaca and merino wool that gently jut out of the strand of nylon holding the yarn together. While fluffy, the tufts are just the right length, never overwhelming the Posh Alpaca it’s held with.

MATERIALS
Yarn
Yarn A:
Universal Yarn Posh Alpaca [45% wool, 30% acrylic, 25% superfine alpaca; 100g/98 yds]; 103 Wolf: 6[7, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 12] balls
Yarn B:
Universal Yarn Minou [52% nylon, 40% baby alpaca, 8% merino; 50g/158 yds]; 104 Kitten: 2[2, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3, 3] balls
Yarn Characteristics
Posh Alpaca is a super-bulky single ply yarn that blends wool, superfine alpaca, and acrylic. The twist is not overly tight, making the yarn feel elastic, soft, and offering a surprising amount of drape. Minou is a unique, DK-weight eyelash yarn. Baby alpaca and merino wool strands gently stand out of the nylon chain that holds them together. Each "eyelash" is about .25 inches / .5 cm long.
Recommended needle size
[always use a needle size that gives you the gauge listed below - every knitter's gauge is unique]
Needle A: US #11/8mm circular needle, 24-40 inches/60-100cm long
Needle B: US #13/9mm circular needle, 24-40 inches/60-100cm long
Needle B (for neckband and armhole edging): US #13/9mm circular needle, 16 inches/40cm long

GAUGE
Note: It is recommended to work two swatches: one following the Left or Right Front Chart (Sizes XS-1X), and one in Moss Stitch pattern. Gauge is always taken after blocking.
20-st Front Panel (XS-1X) measures 7.25 inches/18.5 cm wide, using larger needles and Yarn A only
9 sts/15 rows = 4 inches/10 cm in Moss Stitch, using larger needles with one strand each of colors A and B held together
11 sts/16 rows = 4 inches/10 cm in Moss Stitch with smaller needles, using color A only
PATTERN NOTES
[Knitty's list of standard abbreviations and techniques can be found here.]
This cardigan is worked flat in pieces and seamed. The body is comprised of three rectangles, each worked from the bottom up. The front pieces wrap around the back of the work and are joined at the center back using the three-needle bind off.
When working the Fronts, a single strand of color B is held together with Yarn A for half of the panel, then dropped and the remainder of the panel is worked with a single strand of Yarn A. This creates a fluffy, frayed-like collar.
When placing markers to mark armhole/shoulder placement, ensure that the RS of the work is facing.
