INTRODUCTION

Brielle

beauty shotby

Piquant

My aim was to create a sweater that would work with both handspun and commercial yarns. Handspun gives the plain stockinette stitch more texture and character where the commercial yarns will be more streamlined. The cable is a large "high-relief" cable* so even if the handspun yarn does not have a lot of twist/consistency, the stitch definition will still be clear and prominent.

Brielle is a close fitting, body-conscious sweater. It is easy to knit and has just a touch of flare with the front cable and side-seam shaping. The side ribbing allows for give if you have a straighter build and curve if that suits your body better. Wear it stand alone or over a silky button down, with a skirt or jeans – it is versatile and fun!

The sweater is constructed from the top down. This allows you to try on the sweater as you go so that bust shaping and waist shaping line up on your body correctly. It also allows for the cable to start right at the "V" of the neck.

Yarn Characteristics
spacer Both sweaters are shown in DK-weight yarns that have a slight halo, are very soft, and are quite warm. Any DK-weight wool or wool blend will work nicely. Coopworth sheep are common in New Zealand. They are in the longwool category with annual fleece lengths of about 6 inches / 15 cm, even crimp, a nice luster, and a micron count of about 35.

PATTERN NOTES

[Knitty's list of standard abbreviations and techniques can be found here.]

Construction method: The upper back is worked first and sts are placed on waste yarn. Both the upper fronts are worked at the same time using two balls of yarn.

Bust shaping: Instructions are provided for bust short rows for up to a D cup. For larger than a D cup, consider putting in vertical bust darts instead of or in addition to the given short rows. Further information: Amy Herzog has written an article on the usefulness of vertical bust darts; Deb Gemmell has written on adding vertical darts to a top-down sweater.

Techniques:

  • When casting on at the beginning or end of a row, use the backward-loop/e-stitch cast-on method
  • high-relief cables
  • Do not include the cast-on edge when measuring length
  • How to seam a horizontal (back neck) to a vertical (back collar)
  • Any short row method will work for this pattern. Some (German and Japanese) use the point-of-turn stitch, and others (wrap and turn, YO) use the stitch after the turning point to manipulate the turn to hide the hole. For the bust darts, this is just one stitch further from center and will not matter. For the sleeve caps, the methods that work after the turning point will have two fewer sleeve-cap short rows – this also will not make a difference in the design or fit.

14 High Relief Cable Right: Sl next 7 sts to cable needle and hold at back of work, p1, k5, p1 from left needle, p1, k5, p1 from cable needle.

P2, K3 Rib (worked in the rnd; multiple of 5 sts)

Join for Back:
Next row [WS]: P 16[18, 20, 22, 26, 28, 29, 30, 32, 33] sts, CO 40 sts for back neck, P 16[18, 20, 22, 26, 28, 29, 30, 32, 33] across held Left Back Shoulder sts. 72[76, 80, 84, 92, 96, 98, 100, 104, 106] sts.

Cont working in St st across all Back sts until piece measures 6.5[7, 7.5, 8, 8.5, 9, 9.5, 9.5, 9.5, 10] inches / 16.5[18, 19, 20.5, 21.5, 23, 24, 24, 24, 25.5] cm from back neck CO edge, ending after a WS row.

Shape Back armholes:
Cont in St st, CO 1 st at beg of next 0[0, 2, 2, 6, 6, 8, 10, 14, 14] rows, CO 2[2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9] sts at beg of next 2 rows, then CO 3[3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, 12, 15, 18] sts at beg of next 2 rows. 82[86, 94, 102, 116, 124, 136, 146, 164, 174] sts.

Break yarn and place sts on holder, being careful to secure the last few CO sts so they don’t slip off.

Seam Back Collar to Back Neck:
Beg at right neck edge, with RS facing and the Right Back Shoulder CO and the Back Collar CO edges lined up, sew Back Collar in place around Back neck edge using mattress st and referring to photo below for guidance.

Note: The Back Collar has to curve around the neck edge, so it may seem a bit fiddly at the beginning. Due to the flaring nature of backward-loop CO, it will not look like it will fit. Have faith and seam at a ratio of 4 rows to 3 sts, making sure to go into the center of each st of the Back CO edge and come out the center of the next st. See Pattern Notes for more instructions.

Fronts
With one ball of yarn, CO 18[20, 22, 24, 28, 30, 31, 32, 34, 35] sts for Right Front; with a second ball of yarn and the same needles, CO 18[20, 22, 24, 28, 30, 31, 32, 34, 35] sts for the Left Front. Cont to work each Front with a separate ball of yarn.

Set-up row [WS]: Across Left Front:9[11, 13, 15, 19, 21, 22, 23, 25, 26] , pm, k2, p5, k2; across Right Front: k2, p5, k2, pm, p 9[11, 13, 15, 19, 21, 22, 23, 25, 26] .

Note: Smaller sizes and larger sizes will work the next sections in a different order depending on if the V-neck increases are completed before or after the armholes. For ease of knitting, seam the shoulder seams when the fronts are long enough to comfortably do so. Start at the V-neck pattern sts and work out to the armholes to be sure the Back Collar and the V-neck front line up. See photo above for reference.

Shape Neck and Armholes:

Sizes XXS[XS, S, M, -, -, -, -, -, -] Only:
Note:
Read ahead! Neck and armhole shaping are worked at the same time.

Inc row [RS]: Across Right Front: knit to m, m1p, sl m, p2, k5, p2; across Left Front: p2, k5, p2, sl m, m1p, knit to end. 2 sts increased.
Next row [WS]: Across Left Front: purl to m, sl m, k2, p5, k2; across Right Front: k2, p5, k2, sl m, purl to end.

 42[44, 48, 52, -, -, -, -, -, -] sts for each Front once all shaping has been completed.

Once all neck and armhole shaping has been completed, cut yarn for Right Front, but not Left Front.

With RS of Back facing, slip Back sts onto LH needle; pm for left side ‘seam’, then, using yarn from Left Front, patt across Back sts, pm for right side ‘seam’, patt across Right Front. You will now be working back and forth across all the body sts until V-neck increases are complete.

Cont in patt as est until all neck shaping has been worked Note: There is 1 more row worked for the Right Front than the Left Front, as 1 row was worked in joining the back.

Next row [RS]: Patt to last st, place last st of row and first st of row on holder. Join to work in the rnd and patt to right side ‘seam’ m. This is now the new beg of rnd. 164[172, 188, 204, -, -, -, -, -, -] sts.
