INTRODUCTION
Good Bones
by Michelle Porter
![]()
This classic fitting women's pullover has "Good Bones". This means not only does it have seams, which gives it firm shape, but it also is a great starting point for customizing to your own body and taste. You are offered a choice of sleeve lengths and optional bust darts.
It feels like these days almost every new pattern I see is worked in the round, top down, and one piece. This design is not that! It is worked in pieces, bottom up, and with full fashioned shaping that gives you that impressive tailored look.
Two strands of fingering weight yarn are held together to get worsted weight gauge. A custom marled effect is produced when you choose to combine 2 different colored yarns. For best results choose yarn pairs that have similar plies: 1 ply with 1 ply, 2 ply with 2 ply and multiple plies together.
I was able to gift a personalized sweater each, to my mom, sister and friend, as well as one for myself, from stash diving and using that special yarn I already had.

Yarn Characteristics
For best results choose fingering-weight yarn pairs that have a similar number of plies: 1 ply with 1 ply, 2 ply with 2 ply and multiple plies together.
Sample A uses a pairing of hand dyed sock yarn, both are a dense, variegated 3 ply.
Sample B uses two 1 ply singles, in fingering weight. One is wildly variegated and the other is tonal.
Sample C is worked with the same yarn in two different colorways. It is a hand dyed, multi-ply fingering/sock yarn in mixed fibers.
Sample D is a combo of two gradient sets, with an extra color added. All yarns are 1 ply fingering weight, some tonal, some variegated and some speckled.

20 sts/26 rows = 4 inches/10 cm in stockinette stitch and larger needles with 2 strands of yarn held together as one

PATTERN NOTES
[Knitty's list of standard abbreviations and techniques can be found here.]
Construction method:
This sweater uses 2 strands of fingering-weight yarn held together to get a worsted-weight gauge and marled effect. The garment is worked flat, in pieces, from the bottom up and then seamed. The collar sts are picked up and worked in the round.
1 x 2 Rib – Multiple of 3 sts
All RS rows/rounds: *K1, p2; rep from * to end.
All WS rows: *K2, p1; rep from * to end.
DS: Double stitch of German Short row shaping. With yarn in front, slip next stitch purlwise to right hand needle, move yarn up and over the needle to the back. Continue in pattern as instructed with yarn at front to purl or at back to knit.
Techniques:
- One selvage stitch on each side is used in seaming and not calculated in finished measurements.
- Always bind off the sts where stated. Do not place live sts on stitch holders to save a step when working neckline shaping. Do not graft live shoulder stitches – the 3-needle bind off gives firm structure to this shaped shoulder and keeps it from stretching out.
- To avoid color pooling if using variegated yarns, use 2 sets of 2 strands of yarn at a time and work in alternating rows, as if working in stripes. Carry yarn not in use up the side of the work.
- Adding length to the body or sleeves will use more yarn.

FINISHING
With stitch holders at shoulders remaining in place, wet block pieces by soaking in lukewarm water with a small amount of wool wash if desired. Gently squeeze out as much water as possible. Spread pieces out following given measurements and pat into shape on a towel or blocking board to dry flat. A handheld steamer could also be used to block pieces.
Join shoulders:
For each shoulder, return shoulder stitches from stitch holders to needles, with points toward the armhole edge, and join using 3-needle bind off technique with attached yarn.
Neckband
With RS facing and smaller circular needle, join 2 strands of yarn held together at neck edge of left shoulder seam. Work within a 1 st selvage. Pick up and knit 22[22, 22, 23, 23, 23, 24, 24, 24, 25] sts down left front neck edge; 10[12, 12, 14, 14, 14, 16, 16, 16, 18] sts across centre front; 22[22, 22, 23, 23, 23, 24, 24, 24, 25] sts up right front neck edge; 9[10, 10, 11, 12, 12, 13, 13, 13, 14] sts down right back neck edge; 12[12, 14, 14, 16, 16, 16, 16, 18, 18] sts across centre back; and 9[9, 10, 11, 11, 11, 12, 12, 13, 14] sts up left back neck edge. 84[87, 90, 96, 99, 99, 105, 105, 108, 114] sts now on needle, or a stitch count number divisible by 3. Place stitch marker and join to work in the round.
Next round: *K1, p2; rep from * to end.
Rep last round 13 more times.
Bind off in rib pattern. Cut yarn leaving a long strand (for sewing folded neckband to neckline) approx 1 yd/1 m.
Fold neckband in half to WS. Loosely whipstitch the bound off sts of neckband to neckline shaping on WS of garment.

Seaming
With a 1 st selvage and using attached yarn, join Front to Back at sides with Mattress stitch. Join Sleeve seams with same method.
Sew Sleeve caps into armholes with a 1 st selvage and Mattress stitch/invisible seam, matching underarm shaping and easing in curved top of Sleeve caps.
Weave in all yarn ends, closing any gaps.
