Light in the season of darkness

Hi. How are you? I hope you're good. I'm actually good, too.

For a number of reasons, I'll be glad to see the end of 2025, and I know so many of you will as well. I hate to wish time away, because we only have so much of it, but enduring the socio-political climate of this past year has taken strength I think many of us had no idea we had, and hoped we'd never have to rely on. But if you're reading this, that means you got through every one of those hard days and you're still here. HUZZAH! Light! Let there be light! (It's coming!)

I have knit much less than I thought I would, mostly because I've only been able to concentrate on the simplest of patterns and shapes. I started several things that never made it past the first inch. I finished a gorgeous sweater for me and then promptly ruined it in the first wash. But I still keep reaching for my knitting as the best self-soothing system I have. Unlike chocolate, it doesn't make my pants stop fitting. The good thing: my baby grand-nephew doesn't care how fancy his blanket or sweater are; he just wants to be comfy. There have been other knitting wins too. I'll see what I can do about getting them in my Ravelry. I like looking back and seeing what things I've made, especially if I've given the FOs away.

For those following along on the neurodivergence subplot, I've found a therapist who made me tear up on our initial hello zoom call when they HEARD ME and understood my struggles very well because they're not just mine. I look forward to whatever comes of our sessions. I told her my primary goal is peace. I need to feel that within myself, because I've spent 6 decades searching for something externally to make me feel like I'm okay, and clearly that's not how you do it. I'm also grateful that the drug I turned to for comfort my whole life was food, because as destructive as that has been, it's also kept me from more dangerous addictions.

The Clapotisfest winner emails are still going out, but we're getting close to the end. I'll keep you posted about when I'm finally finished.

My sincere apologies to everyone who's still waiting to send out yarn or to choose their prize. I never imagined this year would be the personal mess it's turned into, and I'm sorry it's affected other people.

ABOUT THE WINTER ISSUE | The theme this issue is Scraptastic! I asked our Knittyguild what they wanted to see in future issues, and this was the NUMBER ONE choice: what to do with mini-skeins sets and leftover yarns. They want to know how best to wrangle a ton of colors of the same weight of yarn into something beautiful!

Our submissions this time are so full of color and delicious yarn in response, I think you're gonna love it! There are patterns meant for yarns you love, yarns that evoke memories of happy projects past, and even ways to use up yarns you have no idea why you bought and don't really like anymore. Really!

In columns, Kate Atherley teaches us how to pick the right size to knit without guessing (cause that never works), and Julia Madill talks knitting vs crochet, sharing with us the best and worst of each craft, in her humble opinion. So off you go, then, to check out all the goodies on our front page.

SOCIAL MEDIA? A reminder that you can connect with Knitty on Bluesky where I chat with readers, announce the latest Knitty news, and the usual stuff we used to do on the other place. Come find us!

JOIN KNITTYGUILD | One more huge change has just happened in how we fund Knitty, and it's a very positive one! Our Patreon is now the home of Knittyguild™, and like almost every other reader-funded enterprise, we're billing monthly. I'm quite certain a lot of people found our per-issue billing structure confusing, especially since it conflicted with Patreon's "you're being billed MONTHLY" wording which I couldn't change. Now everyone is being billed monthly and it's working super well. If you want to join the coolest knitting guild on the internet, come check us out!

Knittyguild members get rewards for their support, like early access to every new issue, and at the Sock level and up, they can use our super-cool feature, knitty+! It lets them customize Knitty patterns showing only the size they're going to knit, so the pattern text is leaner and easier to follow! There are other benefits to knitty+, and other benefits to being a Knittyguild member, too. Check it out here, and see if you'd like to join us!

How else can you help Knitty stay strong and stick around without spending a penny? Here are some suggestions:

  • tell your knitting and crochet friends about us!
    • Tag them on our Instagram or Facebook posts
    • Tell your fiber group, guild or meetup about Knitty or a Knitty pattern that you're working on
    • Share your Knitty pattern WIPs and FOs on social media and let people know where to find the pattern
  • follow us on social media! Bluesky | Facebook | Instagram
  • if you are able to support us financially at any amount, check out knitty.me, which lays out all the ways you can do that (including joining Knittyguild)

Thank you for being a Knitty reader! More people don't know about Knitty than those that do, so when you share us with your fiber friends, you're doing a great thing!
