Letter From The Editor
The scoop from the Editor

photo: AmySun helps.
This winter has been relentlessly cold and snowy. But over the last two weeks, it warmed up and it got sunny. We know our bodies require the vitamin D that sunlight provides, and that some of us struggle with dark days. Having a dog (still feels new to me after 4 years) means no matter what, I'm going to be outside every day, and when the sun returns, it is glorious. So thank you, Sky, for making me much less of a hermit than pre-2021 Amy. The sun has been helping, even as things are still challenging in the outside world.
I got very annoyed at myself for not sewing this winter like I planned to. I have a bag of oversized clothes (including my favorite underwear, now discontinued) that needs simple seams taken in so that it'll still fit. Part of the issue is that my new-ish serger does NOT want to give me a balanced seam, and YES I've looked at all the videos. I have to suck it up and buy serger thread in a few more noticeably different colors in order to finally fix this.
But nothing's wrong with my sewing machine, a Bernina quilter's edition from the '90s bought with the $20 bills my beloved Grandma sent me every time she wrote me a letter. Yeah, a pretty generous woman, my Grandma. I wanted to make sure to use the money for something special back then. More than 25 years later, my Bernina still works a treat. So it's time to finally take the thrifted sweatshirt that I've cropped and re-attach the ribbing. And then overstitch the applique of a bright pink star, like the one I saw someone wearing on Instagram. I'll wear it in my editor's picture next issue, goldangit. I'll do the underwear too, but you won't get to see that.
ABOUT THE SPRING+SUMMER ISSUE
This issue is full of bright and cheerful color. The theme I proposed was One, Two, Three – patterns that use just a few skeins. We got some gems, and some wonderful hangovers from our Winter call for scrappy patterns are also making an appearance. I hope you find something that makes you eager to cast on!
In columns, Kate Atherley fully explains what "blocking" actually means, with pictures (hint: it almost always does not involve pins). Julia Madill makes crochet charts much, much easier for us knitters to understand. With pictures too. Off you go, then, to check out all the goodies on our front page.
SOCIAL MEDIA? A reminder that you can connect with Knitty on Bluesky where I chat with readers, announce the latest Knitty news, and the usual stuff we used to do on the other place. Come find us!

JOIN KNITTYGUILD | Our Patreon is the home of Knittyguild™, and like almost every other reader-funded enterprise, we're now billing monthly. I'm quite certain a lot of people found our previous per-issue (4x a year) billing structure confusing, especially since it conflicted with Patreon's "you're being billed MONTHLY" wording which I couldn't change. Now everyone is being billed monthly and it's working super well. If you want to join the coolest knitting guild on the internet, come check us out!
Knittyguild members get rewards for their support, like early access to every new issue, and at the Sock level and up, they can use our super-cool feature, knitty+! It lets them customize Knitty patterns showing only the size they're going to knit, so the pattern text is leaner and easier to follow! There are other benefits to knitty+, and other benefits to being a Knittyguild member, too. Check it out here, and see if you'd like to join us!
How else can you help Knitty stay strong and stick around without spending a penny? Here are some suggestions:
- tell your knitting and crochet friends about us!
- Tag them on our Instagram or Facebook posts
- Tell your fiber group, guild or meetup about Knitty or a Knitty pattern that you're working on
- Share your Knitty pattern WIPs and FOs on social media and let people know where to find the pattern
- follow us on social media! Bluesky | Facebook | Instagram
- if you are able to support us financially at any amount, check out knitty.me, which lays out all the ways you can do that (including joining Knittyguild)
Thank you for being a Knitty reader! More people don't know about Knitty than those that do, so when you share us with your fiber friends, you're doing a great thing!
